The University of Amsterdam professor who resigned last year due to inappropriate behaviour had relationships with numerous students and staff over the past ten to fifteen years. \u201cAn eight for a night\u201d, students apparently joked about him.<\/p>\n

The professor of law resigned<\/a><\/u>\u00a0from the University of Amsterdam in November after his faculty launched an investigation into him. Because of the confidential nature of the case, it was decided not to publish any details. The University of Amsterdam and the professor also supposedly signed a declaration of confidentiality.<\/p>\n

Abuse of power<\/h2>

However, insiders<\/a><\/u>\u00a0have now opened up to the Amsterdam Folia. The departed professor apparently had several \u2018hierarchically unequal relationships\u2019 with female students and university staff. He often flirted and made \u2018inappropriate\u2019 comments. \u2018An eight for a late one\u2019, was how students jokingly described him.<\/p>\n

For a long time, Professor of labour law Evert Verhulp led the department where the departed professor created an unsafe atmosphere. According to Verhulp, the case made him feel terrible. \u201cI wondered whether I should have seen it, or whether I was just naive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shocking<\/h2>

In an\u00a0interview<\/a><\/u>\u00a0with Folia, the current law dean Andr\u00e9 Nollkaemper calls the report \u2018shocking\u2019. \u201cDuring the period when this behaviour was taking place, the faculty failed,\u201d says Nollkaemper, who was appointed dean two and a half years ago. \u201cThe faculty has a responsibility to organise itself in such a way that its ears and eyes are open to such situations. Somewhere along the line, that didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t
