Or rather: about the initiations. To enhance the festive spirit, S.T.O.A. organised a symposium in debate centre De Rode Hoed.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers also included the Minister of Education, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rijksoverheid.nl\/ministeries\/ministerie-van-onderwijs-cultuur-en-wetenschap\/documenten\/toespraken\/2018\/12\/01\/toespraak-van-minister-van-engelshoven-bij-symposium-100-jaar-ontgroening\">appears<\/a> rather critical. For her, the initiation process was a reason for her not to join the fraternity when she was a student. \u201cBut I\u2019ve got nothing against the members themselves. Some of my best fellow ministers\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u201cBut I\u2019ve got nothing against the members themselves. Some of my best fellow ministers\u2026\u201d\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"flex mt-6 image:rounded-full image:max-w-[4.375rem] gap-2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"mt-[1px]\">&ndash;<\/span>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-lg font-tiempos-headline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMinister Ingrid van Engelshoven\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>She\u2019s very willing to take a nuanced view on the ritual, she says, but she does point to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2018\/10\/02\/opnieuw-sancties-voor-vindicat\/?noredirect=en_US\">excesses<\/a> (\u2018sometimes criminal offences, in fact\u2019) that have emerged in recent years, particularly at Vindicat in Groningen. The heart of the problem, she feels, is a sense and abuse of power, because that can be the risk if you suddenly give young, inexperienced people authority over others \u2013 with the task of humiliating them. It can be managed differently, she feels. \u201cBeing the meanest is easy. Try being creative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initiations could certainly be a bit more creative, the (former) fraternity members in the room agree. But there\u2019s something they want to emphasise: physical violence has been taboo for a long time. \u201cIn that respect, much has changed,\u201d says president Thom Poorthuis from the Kamer van Verenigingen in Amsterdam. Members are always clearly told that they can go to the police if they are the victim of violence. \u201cObviously, that was an option in the past too,\u201d says Poorthuis, \u201cbut these days we make it very clear that violence must not be resolved internally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does verbal aggression go too far?<\/h2><p>Things become more complicated when psychological violence is involved. When does verbal aggression, the shouting, go too far? Both outsiders \u2013 Van Engelshoven and Andere Tijden presenter Hans Goedkoop \u2013 draw the line at humiliation. Goedkoop says that for the first time in his life, he is among people who feel that humiliation is an acceptable way to treat people. He receives an indignant response. Former and current fraternity members agree: outsiders may feel the tirades are degrading, but that\u2019s not how they are felt. No creative ideas for better initiation rituals are suggested by the guests in the Rode Hoed.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to tolerance to ethnic minorities, the situation is just as complex. According to Ingrid van Engelshoven, initiation rituals were not designed to create a diverse company. \u201cAnyone who\u2019s different is out.\u201d So before you know it, as a fraternity member, you are soon \u2018surrounded by clones of yourself\u201d. She feels that\u2019s a shame, because after your studies you enter society, \u201cand that\u2019s much more diverse than the select company in your fraternity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of those present agree that the traditional initiation puts ethnic minorities off, but sacrifice initiations for the sake of diversity? The participants feel that would be going too far. Initiations are useful, according to the members.<\/p>\n<p>But how can student associations become more diverse? \u201cBy talking to each other,\u201d suggests one of the younger panel members. \u201cWhat could we do to make you feel welcome?
