Offer all medical students equal opportunities in education in order to create diversity among doctors\u2019 ranks. This has been Karen Stegers-Jager\u2019s crusade over the past ten years, both within and outside Erasmus MC, a crusade that in recent years has been enjoying increasing success.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was once asked to explain my research when I applied for a programme for talented researchers. When I finished speaking about my work, I was asked: \u2018Can you really conduct research on that topic?\u2019\u201d During the entire interview, Karen Stegers-Jager speaks passionately and without interruption about her research. But she seems startled by her own anecdote and falls silent for a few seconds. \u201cDoctors had no idea that you could conduct research in this area. I was flabbergasted at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\t

Assistant professor Karen Stegers-Jager (42) of the institute of Medical Education Research Rotterdam (iMERR, Erasmus MC). She obtained her doctorate in 2012 with her research on the role played by ethnicity and cultural background in the academic success of medical students. She received a Veni grant in 2017 for a study into the role of first impressions in the assessment of medical interns. It was the first time a \u2018Veni\u2019 was granted for research into medical education.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n

At first glance, Stegers-Jager seems to be a bit of an outsider in the academic hospital. In a setting where thousands of people have the primary task of \u2018healing people\u2019, she hasn\u2019t spent a single moment in her past ten years at Erasmus MC on patient health \u2013 at least not in a hands-on way. But indirectly, she has the same goal as all the employees in the hospital\u2019s teaching department: turning out the best doctors possible.<\/p>\n\n\t
