Dutch Delight: Vruchtenhagel<\/h2>\n

EM periodically tests typical Dutch foods with help of international students under the name of \u2018Dutch Delight\u2019. This edition, Shafayet Choudhury (25), British Master student International Relations and Global History, tries vruchtenhagel<\/i>.<\/b><\/p>\n

The product<\/b><\/p>\n

As the Dutch consume a lot of sandwiches, or as they call it, boterhammen<\/i>, they have a wide variety of festive toppings to put on them. Especially during breakfast, sugary or chocolate sprinkles of many different kinds are eaten on bread, with or without a layer of butter in between. Vruchtenhagel <\/i>are little sprinkles made of sugar, \u2018fruit juice\u2019 (the backside of the package clarifies that this means one percent apple juice) and some artificial flavour and colour. You can find them in the breakfast section of any Dutch supermarket.<\/p>\n

The review<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shafayet observes the colourful meal he is about to have, and says he has never seen sprinkles like these before: \u201cIt looks like something that six-year-old me would have loved to eat. I grew up on Kellogg\u2019s and Cocopops, and this is just as sugary.\u201d He clearly struggles to eat his sandwich with vruchtenhagel, as a portion of the sprinkles land on the plate and the table: \u201cIt\u2019s impossible to eat this. Did you put butter on it? Yes? Well, it probably needs a lot more butter.\u201d Still he finishes his sandwich, pauses and pensively observes the remaining sprinkles on the plate.<\/p>\n

After having his first vruchtenhagel sandwich, Shafayet does not consider buying it himself due to health reasons: \u201cI\u2019ve not been eating very well since the beginning of this Master, because I\u2019ve been quite busy. But I\u2019m trying to cut down on sugar.\u201d All in all, Shafayet is mildly positive towards these sugary sprinkles, but notes it\u2019s mostly suitable for a children\u2019s breakfast. In general, Dutch breakfast fails to impress him: \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but it\u2019s quite underwhelming in my opinion. Coming from the UK, one slice of bread with a slice of cheese doesn\u2019t really do it for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
