It appears that in the near future, none of the Commissioners\u2019 portfolios will include Education.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of the European Students\u2019 Union and the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions, the students are \u2018outraged\u2019. \u201cThe European Commission and the member states of the European Union are not taking the education community in Europe seriously if this proposal is adopted. This is a terrible mistake (\u2026),\u201d the student representatives write in a <a class=\"gco-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esu-online.org\/news\/article\/6001\/Students-outraged-with-a-new-Commission-portfolio\/\">statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p> <strong>\u2018Education\u2019 scrapped from list<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> As it stands, Eurocommissioner Androulla Vassiliou\u2019s current portfolio \u2018Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth\u2019 will be replaced by the combination \u2018Skills, Youth and Multilingualism\u2019. According to the <a class=\"gco-link\" href=\"http:\/\/png.euractiv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/commissioners_092014-en-v4.png\">proposal<\/a>, which was leaked last week via the website <a class=\"gco-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/sections\/eu-priorities-2020\/exclusive-juncker-team-revealed-308203\">euractiv.com<\/a>, the Belgian politician Marianne Thyssen is to be appointed the new European commissioner for this portfolio.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Education more than just skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> The student unions fear that education will take a back seat in the Commissioner\u2019s new set of responsibilities. Although skills may be important to prospective employers, the students write, education amounts to more than just training. \u201c(\u2026) education has a very broad range of benefits for society as well as individuals \u2013 providing the right skills for the labour market being only one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The final composition of the new European Commission is expected to be announced in the course of this week.
