The Erasmus University delegation won five awards at the National Model United Nations (NMUN) in New York last March. The most important of these was the \u2018outstanding delegation\u2019 award, which the Rotterdam students won as a group. This is the fourth consecutive time that the Rotterdammers have won this award.<\/p>\n

The other awards were four \u2018outstanding position paper awards\u2019, for four of the seven preparatory papers written by the students. \u201cAround five to ten percent of the papers and delegations have won these awards,\u201d explains the trainer of the Rotterdam NMUN delegation Joris van Bakel. \u201cSo an outstanding performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the NMUN, students from different countries take part in simulated United Nations meetings and negotiations. Beforehand, the delegations submit an assignment request for the country they wish to play. The Cedo Nulli students chose Myanmar, because it is a challenging country. \u201cParticularly given the current political situation there,\u201d says Van Bakel.<\/p>\n

350 hours preparation per student<\/h2>

Fourteen students represented Erasmus University, all students from Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB). \u201cIt\u2019s very time consuming, because the students do training sessions at prestigious institutions like Clingendael and have to make preparations in the seven months preceding the conference. On average that adds up to around 350 hours per student.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why are students willing to devote so much time to it? \u201cIt\u2019s a very enjoyable and interesting experience that enables students to meet many different people from all over the world,\u201d says Van Bakel. It also looks good on your CV. \u201cThe students who take part have a better chance of getting a prestigious internship later on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t
