Art students are disorganised neurotics, medical students are reclusive insomniacs, and business students are money-hungry extroverts, dressed up in suits and ties. At least, that\u2019s how the stereotype goes. But these stereotypes aren\u2019t exactly works of fiction. As far as a bunch of researchers in Denmark are concerned, people with similar personality types<\/a> tend to end up studying the same things, so it\u2019s not a total wonder that specific typecasts come about with each study. After spending the past week at Erasmus School for Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB), EM discovered the stereotypes associated with some of the faculty\u2019s studies, but instead of having, let\u2019s say, the sociology students tell us about the stereotypes of their own study, we had them speak on behalf of the other studies.<\/p>\n

The tea drinkers<\/h3>

\u201cPedagogical students only drink mint tea!\u201d a psychology student blurted out within the confines of Cedo Nulli, the student association for the faculty of social sciences perched near the top of the Mandeville building. \u201cIt\u2019s true. The pedagogical students are all, how do you say, motherly and they always offer you something to drink when you meet up with them. But they only offer mint tea. I don\u2019t know what they have against coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not true,\u201d countered a pedagogical student sitting across the table. \u201cWe drink other things than mint tea.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as she said this, another pedagogical student walked through the door clutching mugs in one hand and tea bags in the other.<\/p>\n

The vegetarians<\/h2>

\u201cSometimes we have class with the MISOC students, and I swear, they\u2019re all vegetarian,\u201d said a public administration student as he shuffled out of the ESSB study area, referring to those studying Management of International Social Challenges. \u201cThat\u2019s not a bad thing, but it\u2019s just typically MISOC. It goes with the whole \u2018save the world\u2019 vibe they\u2019ve got going on there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are all ESSB stereotypes based on food and beverage preferences?<\/p>\n

The lazy loungers<\/h3>

\u201cNot going to lie, I lose a little hope for the world when I have class with the people from public administration,\u201d said a MISOC student, knowing full well that she\u2019s speaking under the blanket of anonymity. \u201cThey just lounge around in class and watch us do all the work. After class, I always think it\u2019s no wonder that everything goes so slowly in the public sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could it be confirmed that the typical public admin student is a bit, how do you say, lethargic?<\/p>\n

\u201c Yeah I think that\u2019s actually pretty accurate,\u201d admitted a double-major of both public administration and psychology. \u201cThe psych people read a crazy amount of literature and try to analyse everything from every angle possible, but the public admin students just read the summaries that have been around for years to get by.\u201d<\/p>\n

The non-conformists<\/h3>

On behalf of the Psychology students, let\u2019s debunk one of the most foolish ideas people have about them: Psychology students are not mind readers. But what they are, according to their peers, is the more alternative bunch within the ESSB.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe girls studying psychology dress in a way that is basically anti-H&M,\u201d a sociology student told EM as she pointed out a lady with long black boots and a nose piercing. \u201cI\u2019d call that the typical style of a psychology student. I just notice that style is much more common in that study than it is in the others.\u201d<\/p>\n

The psychology students weren\u2019t bashful about confirming their non-conformity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say that most of us are a bit different in terms of personality and style,\u201d said a third\u00a0year psychology student. \u201cDon\u2019t put my name next to this, but deep down, I think we\u2019re different because we\u2019re all a bit emotionally disturbed. That probably explains why psychology students take so many smoking breaks throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The know-it-alls<\/h3>

While many of the studies within the ESSB have more concrete typecasts, the image of the sociologists was more obscure. One psychology student had this to offer though.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing with the sociology students is that they always feel the need to lecture you when they think they know something better than you,\u201d she said in an irritated tone.<\/p>\n

EM tried to check with a sociology student to see wether there was any truth to this statement, but they fired back with a lecture about the problem with stereotypes. Perhaps the psychology student was right.<\/p>\n\n\t
