This is one of the conclusions found in a report published by the sustainability think tank Changerism today. Erasmus University Rotterdam and RSM cannot identify with the picture sketched in this report.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/changerism.com\/portfolio\/a-pipeline-of-ideas\/\">The report<\/a> is the outcome of a year-long investigation into the relations between RSM and the fossil fuel industry. The researchers spoke with various members of RSM\u2019s staff and made a number of appeals to the Netherlands\u2019 Government Information (Public Access) Act.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Shell able to influence design of the curriculum\u2019<\/h3><p>One of the most remarkable discoveries made by the researchers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftm.nl\/uploads\/cache\/optimjpg\/uploads\/media\/591a0b539ee92\/contract-partnership-2.jpg\">a contract regarding a Shell\/RSM partnership<\/a>, signed by the corporation and the faculty in 2012. This contract proposes setting up a joint steering group (SG) made up of Shell management and RSM researchers. This steering group is intended to provide RSM insight into major developments within Shell, and keep Shell up to date on key developments in the field of business administration. This contract also states that Shell is able to influence the structure of the RSM curriculum and the \u2018profile of the students\u2019: \u201cThe main aim of this SG is: (\u2026) c. For Shell to potentially influence the design of the RSM curriculum and the profile of students who attend the BSc\/MSc\/MBA programmes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers were unable to establish whether \u2013 and if so, how \u2013 Shell indeed exerts such an influence on the curriculum and the students\u2019 profile: \u201cIt should be noted that no one at RSM could make clear how this SG aim impacted or still impacts day-to-day affairs at the faculty, even though several interviewees were close to the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shell financed RSM research used for lobbying purposes<\/h3><p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B0k889x0CjJwUGpRUGRyUENUTmM\/view\">Shell has paid over EUR 300,000<\/a> for a 2009 study focusing on the Netherlands\u2019 business climate for corporate headquarters. However, the report in question only names the employers\u2019 association VNO-NCW as a client \u2013 it does not list Shell as an external funder. This contravenes the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice, which prescribes that external sources of funding are explicitly named in scholarly publications.<\/p>\n<p>The research results were used by VNO-NCW in its lobbying efforts for a tax measure that benefits multinational corporations. <em>Follow the Money<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftm.nl\/artikelen\/rsm-professor-belastingverlaging-multinationals?share=1\">has published a detailed report<\/a> on this study on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> \u2018Broader support base for gas\u2019<\/h3><p>In addition, the Changerism report goes into a study performed by RSM in partnership with Energieonderzoek Centrum Nederland, on behalf of Shell, NAM, GasTerra and ENGIE. As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tki-gas.nl\/projecten\/teg0613001\">stated on the website<\/a> of Topconsortium voor Kennis en Innovatie (TKI) Gas, this study is intended to ultimately create \u201cbroader support base in society for gas as an energy carrier and a widely-accepted \u2018license to operate\u2019 for the gas sector\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The report offers various other examples of ties between researchers and the fossil fuel industry. In addition, it describes a number of recruitment activities undertaken by such companies at RSM and points out the sector\u2019s obvious physical presence on campus in the shape of promotional materials, stands and Shell\u2019s quarterly publication <em>ShellVenster<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RSM: \u2018Report is tendentious, biased and incorrect\u2019<\/h3><p>RSM dean Steef van de Velde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsm.nl\/about-rsm\/news\/detail\/11024-rsm-entirely-unable-to-identify-with-reports-conclusions-on-ties-with-the-fossil-fuel-industr\/\">has announced in a written statement<\/a> that RSM and EUR do not subscribe to the report\u2019s conclusions: \u201cThe report is tendentious, biased and contains factual errors, and is not up to academic standards.\u201d This statement furthermore denies that Shell has any influence on the curricula. \u201cNeither Shell nor any other company plays a formal part in this process.\u201d The University does involve \u2018external organisations and stakeholders\u2019 during the accreditation process and programme evaluations. According to Van de Velde, this is because students\u2019 decision to enrol in a particular degree programme is based in part on its relevance for the employment market.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers\u2019 conclusion that RSM contributes to climate change is \u2018groundless\u2019 and \u2018fundamentally incorrect\u2019. \u201cRSM takes the position that collaboration with all sectors of the economy plays an important role in the realisation of the crucial energy transition and the UN\u2019s sustainable development goals.\u201d In RSM\u2019s view, collaboration with all segments of the private sector is a \u2018must\u2019.
