This was made evident in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eur.nl\/medewerkers\/medewerkersonderzoek\/\">a survey<\/a> of 1,230 academic and support staff carried out by survey agency Effectory.<\/p>\n<p>Only the theme \u2018efficiency\u2019 failed to show any improvement: EUR scored a 6.2 for this, which was the same as the score achieved in 2014; moreover, it was the lowest score awarded for the eight themes surveyed. The employees gave the highest scores to questions related to the themes \u2018loyalty\u2019 and \u2018the ability to retain staff\u2019 \u2013 on average both themes scored 7.8.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABD fell, ESHCC rose<\/h3><p>Looking at individual departments, it is possible to see broader trends (see the table). These show the General Management Directorate (ABD) scored 6.7 for satisfaction, which was almost one whole point lower than in 2014. \u201cA worrying picture!\u201d wrote ABD director Ann O\u2019Brien in an email to all the ABD employees. The score for the Philosophy Faculty also fell from 7.6 to 7.1. However, the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) fared considerably better: the faculty\u2019s score rose by one whole point from 6.4 to 7.4.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"553\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/04\/04121932\/medewerkerstevredenheidsonderzoek-2016-NL.png?image-crop-positioner-ts=1766139107\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/04\/04121932\/medewerkerstevredenheidsonderzoek-2016-NL.png?image-crop-positioner-ts=1766139107 553w, https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/04\/04121932\/medewerkerstevredenheidsonderzoek-2016-NL-300x283.png?image-crop-positioner-ts=1766139107 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undesirable behaviour<\/h3><p>Within EUR, undesirable behaviour on the part of both colleagues and students appears to be a serious problem. No less than 12 percent of the respondents indicated they had been the target of undesirable behaviour. Almost half of all respondents considered their workload was too high (39 percent) or far too high (9 percent). Within ESHCC, the picture was even worse; 70 percent of their employees felt that their workload was too high, or far too high.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were also offered the chance to give anonymous tips on how to improve the organisation. Frequently cited was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2016\/01\/25\/eur-conservatief-in-streefcijfer-vrouwelijke-hoogleraren\/\">lack diversity within the university<\/a>, and one contributor left the following tip: \u201cMore career opportunities for women in academic positions. Currently, 90 percent of the professors are male. That shouldn\u2019t be possible in the year 2016.\u201d Several of the employees surveyed also complained about sexism on the work floor.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel allowance <\/h3><p>Another topic which raises strong feelings is the travel allowance. In particular, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/2013\/04\/29\/pas-vanaf-15-juni-betaald-parkeren\/\">paid parking in the garages<\/a> a constant irritant to many. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to reach EUR using either public transport or your own transport (whether you use trains, trams or your own car). A better travel allowance would help,\u201d wrote one of the University Library\u2019s employees. \u201cMaking employees pay to park doesn\u2019t exactly make them feel appreciated. Part-timers are especially affected by this,\u201d wrote another employee from the Erasmus School of Law (ESL).<\/p>\n<p>However, there were also positive reactions: one iBMG employee wrote: \u201cNow that the campus is so attractive, working at EUR is much more pleasant.\u201d If the university wishes to achieve an even higher satisfaction score in two years\u2019 time, then it should follow one
