Student Christian Meckelburg will be running his first marathon; staff member Iris * will be running her first quarter marathon. Every week, one of them gives us an update on how his or her training is going.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll do the last kilometres of the marathon on determination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week, Christian Meckelburg did more cycling than running. \u201cI\u2019ve led a very isolated existence these past few weeks,\u201d says Christian. \u201cI had to study a lot for my examinations. This meant that I didn\u2019t have much time to run.\u201d But while studying may improve your mental condition, ultimately, running a marathon comes down to your physical condition. \u201cI went spinning two or three times at the Erasmus Sports Centre. It\u2019s an excellent way to stay fit, and you\u2019re finished in less than an hour. I didn\u2019t have more time than that on weekdays.\u201d<\/p>\n

Running on determination<\/h3>

In the weekend, Christian will be able to put on his running shoes again. \u201cThings have been going very well up to now. I\u2019m running 20 to 25 kilometres at a stretch.\u201d That\u2019s around half the distance he\u2019ll be running on the day itself. Nevertheless, he doesn\u2019t intend to add a lot more kilometres to the individual runs in his schedule. \u201cIt\u2019s not healthy to run marathon distances on a regular basis. I\u2019ll be limiting my training runs to 30 kilometres. Which means I\u2019ll have to do\u00a0the last few kilometres of the marathon on determination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five laps around Kralingse Plas<\/h3>

To keep track of how many kilometres he has run, Christian often makes laps around Kralingse Plas. \u201cEach lap is approximately five kilometres. So I do four to five of those.\u201d Doesn\u2019t it ever get boring? \u201cIt\u2019s not that bad,\u201d Meckelburg says with a smile. \u201cI usually run in the evening, when it\u2019s already dark out. As a result, I don\u2019t get to see much of my surroundings, which means there\u2019s not much to annoy me either.\u201d<\/p>\n
