On the Plaza, student Julie is chatting with fellow students, a cigarette in her hand. The criminology student regularly smokes on campus. \u201cWhen I take a break or quickly go to the Spar, I often light a cigarette.\u201d She is sometimes approached about it. \u201cUsually by a security guard. Then they tell me to find another spot.\u201d According to Julie, they don\u2019t tell her to actually leave the campus. \u201cRather a somewhat hidden place, where fewer people are bothered. Between the Food Plaza and the Polak building, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She thinks it makes sense that she is being reminded. \u201cI\u2019m not allowed to smoke here, so then I put my cigarette out and walk away. But it doesn\u2019t really have much effect, because I also see other people smoking everywhere here on campus.\u201d Quitting is not an option for now. \u201cIn that respect I really am a student, I am in a student association as well and almost everyone smokes there. Quitting seems quite difficult to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t

Since 1 August 2020, a smoking ban is in effect at all locations of Erasmus University. This ban is in force 24 hours a day for all students, staff, residents and other campus users. All tobacco and smoking products, including e-cigarettes, are prohibited. According to a university spokesperson, the EUR deliberately doesnn\u2019t choose structural repressive enforcement or actively issuing fines to individuals. Instead, the focus is on prevention, visibility and speaking to people about their behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Officially, you\u2019re only allowed to smoke outside the blue line that surrounds the campus. After two rounds across the campus at different times, there is no one to be seen who does that. An economics student who\u2019s smoking by the pond also confirms this. \u201cI don\u2019t think people really do that. Security is usually lenient and thinks it\u2019s fine if we stand a few steps further away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone reminds smokers<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Erasmus Sport, on the square by the Spar and at the entrance of the Mandeville building it is quiet. The cigarette butts that normally lie in front of the Mandeville building seem to have just been cleared away. \u201cThe smokers are probably still in class\u201d, jokes economics student Jane, who is on the phone with her mother in front of the Spar. \u201cI actually like it when there are no smokers for a while. Otherwise my clothes and hair smell of smoke, I think that\u2019s disgusting.\u201d Still, she wouldn\u2019t be quick to remind smokers. \u201cI don\u2019t want to come across as a know-it-all.\u201d Medical student Teun wouldn\u2019t do so either. \u201cI am fine with people smoking here. As long as others are not bothered by it, it is up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT specialist Edwin walks towards the Plaza with a colleague. \u201cWhy should I speak to smokers?\u201d, he asks rhetorically. \u201cIf the security guard can\u2019t get them to move on, why would I want to try?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do remind them\u201d, says a law student. \u201cI have asthma and I really find smokers very annoying.\u201d She is standing with two friends near the Sanders building. \u201cWhen you walk out of this building, you are regularly hit by a cloud of smoke immediately. Sometimes people even blow smoke in your face.\u201d She then looks at them angrily and speaks to them about it, she says. But it doesn\u2019t have much effect. \u201cThey don\u2019t seem to care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaping is easier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In front of the Langeveld building, two students are talking: one with a cigarette, the other with a vape. \u201cI like vaping because it doesn\u2019t smell and it\u2019s easier\u201d, the student says as she inhales from her vape. \u201cWith a cigarette you always have to carry a lighter.\u201d They know about the smoking ban but have never been spoken to while smoking. \u201cI have only just started smoking\u201d, says the other student. She lights a new cigarette and puts the lighter in her jacket pocket. \u201cAnd I actually take few smoke breaks on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the bicycle parking next to the Langeveld building, a group of students from the International Bachelor of Economics and Business Economics (IBEB) are hanging around. One female student is vaping. The colour of her vape happens to match her purple-painted acrylic nails. Her friends laugh when the words \u2018social smoker\u2019 come out of her mouth. \u201cNo way\u201d, says one of the boys. \u201cShe\u2019s smoking every break.\u201d The student herself says she has only just started. \u201cThat\u2019s also because of my fellow students. Everyone in IBEB smokes\u201d, she jokes. She too is regularly spoken to by security. \u201cUsually when I smoke close to the entrance of a building. If you stand a bit further away, it\u2019s often fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do her friends think of her smoking? \u201cI think smokers should be banned from our society\u201d, a student says jokingly to his girlfriend. \u201cThey should be separated from normal people. I actually do not want to be friends with smokers. \u201cBut for you I will make an exception.\u201d She responds: \u201cBut after this vape I will really stop, promised!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular smoking spots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the entrance of the Theil building, four smokers are standing who don\u2019t want to cooperate with an interview. They do admit that this is their favourite smoking spot. \u201cYou have a view of the square and the water. Especially in summer it is nice here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around the university library turns out to be the busiest smoking spot on campus. Not only students, but also school pupils from the neighbourhood light up a cigarette here. \u201cMy parents don\u2019t know that I vape\u201d, says a secondary school pupil by the pond. She didn\u2019t know that a smoking ban applies on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An mbo student of International Business walks up: \u201cDo you maybe have a lighter?\u201d There isn\u2019t  one, but there are questions. And she\u2019s happy to answer them. The 19-year-old regularly studies in the library and takes smoke breaks around the entrance. She was reprimanded by a security guard a few times. \u201cThey told me I had to stand a bit further away.\u201d She points to the tennis court behind the library. \u201cSo I went there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A library employee who prefers not to share her name sees that happening often. \u201cI see security guards asking smokers to stand a bit further away from the pond. Usually they then walk towards the tennis court.\u201d She too sometimes reminds smokers of the ban. \u201cEspecially people who smoke near the entrance. The smoke drifts into the library and that can be annoying to visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Everyone keeps smoking anyway\u2019<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the footbridge between the library and the Theil building, Baturalp is smoking with a fellow student. \u201cThis is my regular spot. When I take a break while studying in the library, I come here and light two cigarettes\u201d, says the psychology student. The two are aware of the smoking ban, but see little effect. \u201cEveryone keeps smoking anyway, even lecturers\u201d, says his fellow student. Baturalp nods. \u201cIf guards remind me, I put my cigarette out or walk somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three students are standing close together, smoking in a small shelter near the entrance of the library. They don\u2019t want to mention their name or programme. \u201cReminding smokers makes no sense\u201d, one of them says. \u201cSecurity guards or staff accost me very often. They don\u2019t appreciate me smoking here. On the one hand I can understand that, but on the other hand I don\u2019t really know where else I should go.\u201d Walking further away is not an option according to her. \u201cYou just want to quickly smoke a cigarette and go back inside.
