Some 15 to 20 thousand students, lecturers, researchers, administrators and politicians gathered on The Hague\u2019s Malieveld to protest cuts to education and research. \u201cDon\u2019t do it!\u201d<\/p>

The field is muddy, it\u2019s drizzling, and there are train delays. Yet the turnout exceeds expectations. The area fills with tens of thousands of demonstrators. \u201cWe were hoping for around ten thousand people\u201d, says a union representative. \u201cThere might be twice as many.\u201d<\/p>\n

The police estimate the crowd slightly lower, at 15,000, but even so, people have travelled to The Hague from across the country. Buses have been chartered, trains taken, and delays ignored.<\/p>\n\n\t
