Bachelor\u2019s students will not be included in the future screening of foreign students and researchers in sensitive fields, promises outgoing education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf.<\/p>\n

The material taught on Bachelor\u2019s programmes cannot be referred to as sensitive, writes<\/a> Dijkgraaf in a letter to the House of Representatives. He is currently working on a bill designed to tighten knowledge security in the Netherlands and his letter provides a hint of things to come.<\/p>\n

The government plans to ensure that students and researchers from outside the European Union are screened when they come to the Netherlands to work or study in a \u2018high-risk field\u2019. The main question is: what are these fields and who exactly should be screened?<\/p>\n

The minister\u2019s letter indicates an exemption for Bachelor\u2019s students, which in turn suggests that universities of applied sciences are largely out of the picture. He goes on to say that researchers and students already working and studying in the Netherlands should also be exempt. Screening them retrospectively would go against the principle of legal certainty.<\/p>\n\n\t
