Three out of the eight university medicine programmes in the Netherlands may want to reintroduce the lottery system, national daily Trouw writes. Three other ones will revise their admission policies in the context of equal opportunity. This will take a while, however.<\/p>\n

Recently, programmes with a limited number of first-year students (such as medicine) were once again given permission to use a lottery system for the admission of new students. And they are actually considering it, a poll by daily Trouw reveals.<\/p>\n

What is the news exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The selection procedure for the medicine programme will undergo drastic revision to increase diversity amongst students, Trouw writes. The lottery system is reportedly making a comeback. \u201cRadboud University Nijmegen, for instance, may completely switch to an unweighted lottery system\u201d, writes Trouw. \u201cThis would give each candidate the same chance, regardless of their grades obtained or their motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is the current intake of students not diverse enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Selection creates a barrier for prospective students without highly-educated parents, research shows, as well as for students with a migrant background. The Inspectorate of Education criticises<\/a> the randomness of criteria in selection procedures. The programmes are doing whatever they please, is what the criticism came down to.<\/p>\n\n\t
