Many international students and members of staff at Dutch universities feel less welcome now than they did when they arrived, according to a survey by six university magazines. The main reason for this is the political debate on migration.<\/p>\n

The survey questionnaire was completed by a total of 1,330\u00a0students and members of staff at the universities of Groningen, Utrecht, Nijmegen, Delft, Wageningen and Twente. More than 70\u00a0per\u00a0cent said they felt welcome when they arrived in the Netherlands, but only 55\u00a0per\u00a0cent said they still feel that way. The number of survey participants who felt unwanted had risen from 16.5\u00a0per\u00a0cent who felt that way on arrival to 25\u00a0per\u00a0cent who felt that way now.<\/p>\n

Almost half of the participants blamed the increasingly negative<\/a> political debate in the Netherlands about international arrivals. Around 30\u00a0per\u00a0cent said that the current internationalisation debate was reason for them to consider leaving the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t
