In an interview on talk show Op1 last Friday, Pieter Omtzigt said that Dutch should become the language of instruction at universities in the Netherlands within three to four years. \u201cThat way, fewer international students will come to the Netherlands.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProgrammes are taught in English at almost all the universities in the country\u201d, Omtzigt told Op1 presenters Tijs van den Brink and Sven Kockelmann when asked how he plans to reduce migration. He mentioned not just labour migration and the reception of asylum seekers, but also study-related migration.<\/p>\n

Some programmes are almost exclusively attended by international students, said Omtzigt, who is contesting the forthcoming parliamentary elections with his \u2018Nieuw Sociaal Contract\u2019 party. \u201cThere are even universities that have more international students than Dutch students, Maastricht University being one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van den Brink asked him what he intended to do about it. \u201cDutch should be the language of instruction at Dutch universities\u201d, was his reply. International students wishing to study here would then have to learn Dutch.<\/p>\n\n\t
