Driven by his past, encounters with inequality, and sentimental family memorabilia, Student of the Year finalist Yu-Cheng (Alex) Huang (25) wants to improve the inclusion and belonging of students and staff. \u201cI just want to be able to help make people feel at home as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex was nominated for Student of the Year due to his goal to educate people on diversity and inclusion, and improve that at the university. Along with his faculty\u2019s diversity officer Laura den Dulk, he has organised iftars for muslim students during ramadan, arranged \u2018student-confidential persons\u2019, given lectures on queer emancipation and intersectionality and recently he pitched the idea of having all-gender bathrooms on campus. People who nominated him describe him to be extremely modest, friendly and helpful: \u201cSometimes he is so helpful that it comes at the expense of paying attention to himself\u201d, said one of his nominators.<\/p>\n\n\t
