&#8216;The Minister has completely missed the point&#8217;<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf wants to reform the binding study advice (BSA) system and has announced he will be submitting <a href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/nieuwsuur\/artikel\/2467367-bindend-studieadvies-gaat-op-de-schop-onderwijsinstellingen-reageren-verdeeld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his proposal<\/a> to the House of Representatives shortly. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/2018\/09\/03\/minister-van-onderwijs-maak-een-einde-aan-nominaal-is-normaal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">His predecessor<\/a> Ingrid van Engelshoven had similar plans, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/2018\/11\/07\/universiteiten-blijven-zelf-hoogte-bsa-blijven-bepalen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the House rejected<\/a> her proposal in 2018. Motivating both education ministers is the same concern: students are under too much stress.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uni material<\/h2><p>\u201cIt\u2019s stressful, sure, but it also keeps you from slacking off\u201d, one student said on Instagram. Roughly half of the three hundred students who responded said the sixty-credit criterion boosts their academic motivation. One in three felt the bar is too high, resulting in anxiety. Erasmus University Rotterdam is the only university in the Netherlands with a hard requirement that first-year students complete all their credits. This idea was shared by many respondents. \u201cIf you can\u2019t meet the BSA requirement, you\u2019re not uni material. It\u2019s as simple as that\u201d, another said. Still, not everyone agreed. \u201cIt puts way too much pressure and stress on students\u201d, one student wrote. Another said the BSA does not make them feel any more motivated, but it does create loads more stress. \u201cThat is the last thing we need in our super stressful world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filter<\/h2><p>Most students were positive about the current BSA system. \u201cIt\u2019s a really good indication of whether I\u2019m on the right path, or not\u201d, one student wrote. Another respondent added, \u201cIt\u2019s a good filter, because only the motivated students will remain.\u201d And, echoing this: \u201cBecause the die-hards make it to the second year.\u201d
