Minister Dijkgraaf is in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the annual four-country consultation. Among other things, the higher education of Caribbean students in the Netherlands\u00a0was discussed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Caribbean students, it is sometimes difficult to come to the Netherlands for a study programme or exchange. A new \u2018Kingdom grant\u2019 is therefore being introduced, similar to the grants of the European Erasmus programme. The plan had already been announced\u00a0previously<\/a> and has now been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Rectifying the situation<\/h2>

\u201cA student from Aruba, Cura\u00e7ao, Sint Maarten or the BES islands (Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius) can currently go to all European countries \u2013 except the Netherlands \u2013 with a grant from Erasmus+,\u201d says a statement. \u201cThe four countries would like to rectify this situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kingdom grant is intended to enable mobility at senior secondary vocational education, higher professional education and university level, \u201cboth between the islands themselves and with the Netherlands\u201d. Minister Dijkgraaf calls it a concrete step to improve study success. \u201cI am convinced that this will really help them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Orientation year<\/h2>

Another agreement was also made: for a better transition to higher professional education or university education, the four countries wish to combine initiatives for a \u2018pre-academic year\u2019 and further develop them into a \u2018Caribbean academic orientation year\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea is for the three Caribbean universities to offer a joint preparatory programme, \u201cwhere desired in cooperation with Dutch universities of applied sciences and universities\u201d. Secondary education in these parts of the Kingdom must also be strengthened in order to improve the transition to higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t
