From a more inclusive curriculum to a rainbow zebra crossing and targets for female professors. Higher education institutions are doing all kinds of things when it comes to diversity and inclusion, according to a survey by the independent higher education media in the Netherlands. What do students and staff see concretely from all the intentions and notes?<\/p>\n

1.\tDecolonising the curriculum, inclusive teaching material<\/h2>

Of the twenty institutions studied, thirteen have said they are examining their teaching material in order to make it more inclusive. Sometimes this is called \u2018decolonising the curriculum\u2019, sometimes \u2018making education more inclusive\u2019. Curricula are often founded on European or Western perspectives. Institutions and teachers thus try to make room for other perspectives. For instance, by covering more non-Western thinkers or not just using heteronormative examples in lectures. Erasmus University does the same, for instance by training lecturers. Initiatives for more inclusive education are also emerging from lecturers themselves, for instance in response to Black Lives Matter two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\t
