Hermes House Band, which started out as the house band of the Rotterdamsch Studenten Corps<\/em>, turned 40 this year. They celebrated last Saturday, with an enormous extravaganza in Ahoy. One thing is clear: the band is still La-la-<\/em>loving it!<\/p>\n

The 2800 tickets for Hermes House Band\u2019s 40th-birthday celebrations were sold out in no time. And with good reason: last Saturday the Netherlands\u2019 most well-known student band, which started out as the house band of the Rotterdamsch Studenten Corps<\/em>, put on a spectacular show at Ahoy. Hermes\u2019 secret lies not so much in its musical talent, but in the supercharged energy the band brings to every occasion.<\/p>\n

Personal connection<\/h2>

\u2018I do need to make it through the first hour\u2019, one audience member says, grinning over his tray of seven beers. Like many other partygoers, he has a personal connection to Hermes House Band: \u2018It was my housemates who started it, so their sound was everything in my student days.\u2019 Forty years on, that sound is still at the heart of Rotterdam student life. Whether it\u2019s Rotterdam<\/em>, I Will Survive (La la la)<\/em>, or one of their dozens of other high-octane covers, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find a student \u2013 past or present \u2013 who has never sung along to their contagious tunes.<\/p>\n\n\t
