For her research, she carried out fieldwork in the four countries. \u201cThe people involved in these re-enactments are mostly men, so as a female researcher you occasionally hear sexist comments or jokes \u2013 which is annoying, but it\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, however, she experienced more than sexist jokes while conducting fieldwork in Indonesia. Her contact person, someone who introduced her to sources and played a very important role in the research, began to harass her. He initially sent Zurn\u00e9 text messages and asked her out. It was only after I left that I let people know and thanked them,\u201d she says. \u201cHe got very angry that I had left secretly, so he sent nasty messages about me to all the Whatsapp groups and people who had been in contact with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018Seventy percent of female researchers have experienced sexually transgressive behaviour during fieldwork\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common occurrence<\/h2><p>What Zurn\u00e9 went through is not unusual. According to a survey of 666 female researchers, 70 percent have experienced sexually transgressive behaviour during fieldwork. \u201cEven though this percentage is very high, we hardly ever hear about it,\u201d Zurn\u00e9 says. \u201cWhen people talk about transgressive behaviour in the academic world, they are often referring to what happens on campus and not so much to what you might experience in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon arriving back in the Netherlands, Zurn\u00e9\u2019s motivation had taken a severe blow. She felt anxious and depressed. \u201cAt the time, I didn\u2019t know where it came from. I thought: what happened in Indonesia is a closed chapter, it\u2019s over now. It took me a few months to realise how traumatic it had been.\u201d Seven months later, she reported in sick. In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/lova.network\/\">LOVA<\/a>, an organisation for feminist anthropologists and gender studies, she organised webinars and they joined forces to set up the working group <a href=\"https:\/\/lova.network\/working-groups\/safety-in-the-field\/\">Safety in the Field<\/a>. Together with Janne Heederik and Tine Davids of Radboud University, Zurn\u00e9 took on the primary responsibility and compiled a journal focusing on the experiences of female researchers.<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018Not just women in masculine environments are faced with this issue, someone researching a lesbian community in Senegal had also experienced it\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>Zurn\u00e9 gives a few examples: \u201cSome colleagues who are conducting research among the military or football fans get a lot of sexist comments, are not taken seriously and are not involved in everything.\u201d Transgressive behaviour occurs everywhere, emphasises Zurn\u00e9, regardless of sexual preferences. \u201cBecause it is not just women in masculine environments who are faced with this issue, someone researching a lesbian community in Senegal had also experienced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the location doesn\u2019t make much of a difference, says Zurn\u00e9. \u201cThese occurrences are not exclusive to far-off countries in Africa or Asia either. Colleagues who are doing research in Europe are having the same experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vulnerable group<\/h2><p>Although anyone can experience transgressive behaviour, according to Zurn\u00e9 young PhD students are slightly more vulnerable. \u201cThey are very keen for the research to succeed and are less willing to say that something is not acceptable to them, even though the experience as a whole can drastically impact the research,\u201d she says. \u201cAmong other things, it impacts the data you collect and your relationship with the research sources.\u201d Looking back on her own experience, Zurn\u00e9 says: \u201cFor example, I knew that the re-enactment group were recording some footage at one point, but I didn\u2019t go because I didn\u2019t want to go alone. What\u2019s more, there came a time when I always took a male friend with me because I didn\u2019t feel safe. I said he was there to help me translate, whereas my Indonesian more than sufficed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018We only talk about our successes but never our failures, because if you mention what\u2019s going wrong you might get stamped as not being a good researcher\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Competitive world<\/h2><p>According to Zurn\u00e9, the fact that PhD students don\u2019t often speak out about transgressive behaviour during fieldwork relates to issues such as the competitive nature of the academic world. \u201cWe only talk about our successes but never our failures, because if you mention what\u2019s going wrong you might get stamped as not being a good researcher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And she thinks this needs to change. Everyone, including male researchers, must have the courage to express their vulnerability. \u201cIf only female researchers or researchers of colour tell their story, it seems as if they are the only ones experiencing these kinds of issues.
