On Campus Day, when the entire campus is filled with stalls from student associations and companies, Extinction Rebellion<\/a> set up ‘a stand’ next to the tram stop on the edge of campus. Two members of the protest group stand there talking to people about climate change. “The police and security don’t mind as long as we’re not on the campus grounds.”<\/p>\n

The members of Extinction Rebellion<\/a> knew that a lot of students would come to the information market on Tuesday, so they decided to stand at the entrance of the campus. They also hung up large banners: \u2018Extinction Rebellion\u2019 <\/em>and \u2018Make noise for Mother Earth<\/em>\u2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to raise awareness about sustainability and climate issues, especially among new students,\u201d states member and EUR-student Adriana. \u201cWe think it\u2019s important that first-year students get the message right from the start of their studies about how bad things are.\u201d She and another member parked themselves at the tram stop from ten in the morning. \u201cWe plan to stay here until the end of the afternoon. Luckily, two other members will arrive in another hour, so we can take a break then,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Police and security<\/h2>

The Rotterdam police briefly dropped by in the morning. \u201cApparently someone called them because they were worried that we were going to stage a demonstration\u201d, Adriana explains. They also had a quick check in with the university\u2019s security. \u201cThey think it\u2019s okay for us to stand here and talk to people, as long as we aren\u2019t on university grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Eurekaweek board does not consider it a problem either, Adriana points out. \u201cThey just insisted that we aren\u2019t allowed to hand out flyers, because no one is allowed to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t

Not in the mood<\/h2>

Most students respond positively to their chats, Adriana notes. \u201cWe have had some great conversations. Basically, students all know a lot about sustainability, and they also do their best to fight climate change by, for instance, eating vegetarian or vegan and traveling less by plane,\u201d she goes on to say. \u201cThey also realise that individual efforts are not enough; structural changes have to be made too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, some students were not in the mood for the action group. \u201cSome of them turned up slightly worse for wear and said: \u2018I can\u2019t cope with a discussion about the climate with my hangover\u2019. Well, we can understand that\u201d, Adriana laughs.<\/p>\n\n\t
