Preconceptions about people with ADHD still bother Hazem. The fear that teachers or employers will find him lazy, lax or loud runs deep. The university can do something about those preconceived notions, he says. “Teach employees and students about it. Then we won’t have to keep on explaining it to our professors.”<\/p>\n

It is not so easy to tell a teacher that you have 'something', says Hazem. Because what will they think?<\/span><\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure>

\u201cYou should try walking in the shoes of someone who has ADHD, autism or some other mental health condition\u201d, Hazem Omran (21) reasons. If the university wants to become a better place for students with functional impairments, empathy is a first step, the communications student sums up. \u201cOrganise a mental health day and teach staff and students what it\u2019s like to have a mental health issue. Then we won\u2019t have to keep explaining it to our teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazem believes this would help to counteract any prejudices people might have. It\u2019s not so easy to tell a teacher that you have \u2018something\u2019. \u201cWhat will they think? ADHD? Oh, then you\u2019re just lazy and disinterested. Or maybe they might think that you\u2019re trying to find an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t
