Judging from a judgement passed by a sub-district judge last week, another student who used to live in the Lucia Building is to be awarded a refund of an administrative fee he was charged unjustly. The Squarerent legal consultancy firm, which represented the two students who successfully sought a refund of the fee, is currently in talks with multiple students who wish to seek a refund of their own.<\/p>\n

Twenty-two-year-old Lars Morsink is relieved that the judge found in his favour. \u201cThose additional costs they told me to pay simply weren\u2019t right.\u201d The judge found that only \u20ac7.72 of the \u20ac200 Morsink was charged when he moved into the complex was a justifiable and legally acceptable fee for services rendered.<\/p>\n

Morsink had to wait several years due to the pandemic, but hung in there and was ultimately rewarded for his patience. Now that the judge has ruled on the case, the housing association will be required to refund the sum paid in excess of \u20ac7.72. After adjustment for inflation, that sum will amount to \u20ac232.28.<\/p>\n

\u2018Vague\u2019 costs<\/h2>

The owner of the housing complex, Austrian bank Raiffeisen, brought up several types of expenses that it felt justified the \u2018booking fee\u2019. These expenses included a fee for help applying for housing benefit and the provision of a \u2018key buddy\u2019, a digital key that was easy to share with others. It also included the costs of an introduction to the building and to the city. These were just some of the costs which according to the judge should not have been passed on to the building\u2019s tenants.<\/p>\n

Basically, Morsink\u2019s case is identical to that of his fellow student Joris Pijpers, who was told by the court in March that he would have the lion\u2019s share of the \u2018booking fee\u2019 refunded.<\/p>\n\n\t
