In the old days, all buildings on campus Woudestein were indicated by letters. There was a method to the assignation of the letters: A for \u2018Aula\u2019 (auditorium), B for \u2018Bibliotheek\u2019 (library) and C for \u2018Collegezalenhal\u2019 (lecture room building). From a certain moment onwards, the next buildings to be erected on campus were assigned letters in alphabetical order. However, in 2012, the university started giving some buildings proper names too, in an attempt to allow students, staff and visitors to learn a little more about EUR\u2019s history and to give the campus a more personal feel.<\/p>\n

When the decision was made that certain buildings were to be given proper names, each of EUR\u2019s faculties submitted the names of three people who had made a great contribution to their particular academic discipline. This resulted in a 27-name shortlist. \u201cIn the end, the buildings were named after prominent EUR professors and members of staff,\u201d says Roman Koot, the university\u2019s heritage custodian. \u201cIn addition, several buildings were named after Rotterdammers whose intellectual legacy is important to the university, such as Desiderius Erasmus and Pierre Bayle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t
