Last year, just after the beginning of the pandemic, both the number of candidates<\/a>\u00a0running in the elections and voter turnout increased significantly compared to the previous year. However, this year, the supposed \u2018pandemic effect\u2019 seemed to have worn off. Fewer candidates chose to stand for election, and voter turnout fell by a whopping 4 per cent.<\/p>\n

During the University Council elections, held between 10 and 18 May, 6.5 per cent of all EUR students cast a vote, down from 10.5 per cent in 2020. It was the lowest turnout ever. Normally it is between 10 and 12 per cent. Erasmus University has long been reputed to have \u2018uneventful\u2019 elections; all other universities in the Netherlands have a higher voter turnout.<\/p>\n
