Dozens of academics, students and trade union members staged a protest near the Hofvijver pond next to the Houses of Parliament in The Hague on Tuesday afternoon. They sought to raise politicians\u2019 awareness of the fact that the tertiary education sector is chronically underfunded. The protesters feel that the sector needs an additional annual \u20ac1.1 billion capital injection.<\/p>\n

The protesters stood on the banks of the pond wearing black berets with a red square attached to them (i.e. square academic caps), which have become the symbol of protesting academics. Some protesters were wearing their full professors\u2019 gowns, while others wore snorkelling fins, snorkelling masks and goggles. They were holding up banners and cardboard signs bearing slogans.<\/p>\n
