They have been organising daily protests on several university campuses, with the support of researchers and other staff members. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/artikel\/2367022-meer-dan-150-studenten-opgepakt-bij-protest-in-istanbul-voor-academische-vrijheid.html\">alleged<\/a> that two students were wounded on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters fear that the new rector will put an end to liberal campus culture, academic freedom and institutional independence, for which Bogazici University has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.nl\/nieuws\/2021\/01\/21\/erdogan-pakt-de-laatste-bastions-van-academische-vrijheid-in-turkije-aan-a4028681\">beacon<\/a> until now.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coup<\/h2><p>The protests did not come out of the blue. Academic freedom has come under increasing pressure in Turkey in recent years. After the attempted coup of July 2016, President Erdogan ramped up control. He closed dozens of universities and fired thousands of faculty and researchers. They were accused of spreading propaganda or belonging to a \u201cterrorist organisation\u201d headed by spiritual leader <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fethullah_G%C3%BClen\">Fethullah G\u00fclen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of the researchers dismissed from their posts, an estimated three thousand were sitting at home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cursor.tue.nl\/nieuws\/2017\/maart\/nog-ruim-drieduizend-turkse-docenten-thuis-na-coup\/\">without work<\/a> at the end of 2017. Some of them tried to flee abroad, including to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dub.uu.nl\/nl\/nieuws\/recordaantal-turkse-wetenschappers-vraagt-nederland-om-hulp\">the Netherlands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solidarity<\/h2><p>Internationally, including in this country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bogaziciabroad\/?igshid=133akppj4ytpn\">public protests<\/a> have been organised in their support. Last Saturday, students at Rotterdam University College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/2021\/02\/01\/euc-studenten-protesteren-tegen-nieuwe-rector-in-turkije-de-universiteit-wordt-als-politiek-werktuig-gebruikt\/?noredirect=nl_NL\">demonstrated<\/a> at the Hofvijver in The Hague. And today the Groninger Studentenbond (GSb) organised a demonstration to show their solidarity, which drew an attendance of around thirty. They are calling on Dutch universities and the Ministry to condemn the arrests and come out in defence of academic freedom. \u201cUp until now it has been eerily silent\u201d, said GSb chairperson
