The question as to what the various political parties intend to do with the current student loan system is an important one in the run-up to the elections for the Dutch Lower House, to be held in March 2021. Ever since student grants were abolished in 2015, students have incurred increasingly large debts in order to get a degree. The majority of Dutch MPs wish to reverse that situation.<\/p>\n

So how is that going to affect student finance? If the polls are to be believed, the VVD will continue to be by far the biggest party in the Lower House, and they appear to be the only party that still supports<\/a> the current student loan system. But who knows? The liberal party is yet to release its draft election manifesto. The same is true for the CDA, even though this ruling party has always strongly objected to student loans.<\/p>\n

The smaller ruling parties, D66<\/a> and ChristenUnie, have already indicated that they wish to reintroduce student grants, as have the opposition parties GroenLinks<\/a>, PvdA<\/a> and SP<\/a>. But that is where the similarities end.<\/p>\n
