Sunday evening Eurekaweek 2020 officially kicked off with a live broadcast. At exactly 8pm presenter Dzifa Kusenuh opened the broadcast after a performance by Erasmus Music Collective. Among those attending the broadcast were Rector Magnificus Rutger Engels and Deputy Mayor Bert Wijbenga.<\/p>\n

In the studio, the Eurekaweek board sat one-and-a-half metres apart. Due to the coronavirus, the Eureka week launch is being held in a more tempered form in comparison with previous years. During the broadcast, repeated announcements were made to remind people of the importance of social distancing. \u201cAlthough I understand how difficult it is for young people, please follow the rules\u201d, said Deputy Mayor Bert Wijbenga. \u201cThe situation is annoying, but try and make the best of it. Having fun during the introductory week is certainly very important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compliments to the Eurekaweek board<\/h2>

Wijbenga complimented the Eurekaweek board for its work. \u201cIt certainly hasn\u2019t been easy to organise this event during these times\u201d, he said. \u201cBut they didn\u2019t give up. They\u2019re persistent and they have things under control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eurekaweek chairman Sander Doude van Troostwijk admitted: \u201cOf course, it\u2019s not what we had expected.\u201d He went on to say that the pandemic had cost him a few nights\u2019 sleep. Still, he\u2019s glad things all worked out in the end. \u201cThis is what we\u2019ve all been working towards for a long time and now it\u2019s finally underway.\u201d<\/p>\n

<em>Peer support<\/em> is crucial<\/h2>

Rector Magnificus Rutger Engels, considers Eurekaweek to be \u2018extremely important\u2019. \u201cIt is our intention to prepare new students as well as we can before they embark on their courses\u201d, he said. He too is relieved that Eurekaweek can take place. \u201cAlthough I didn\u2019t lose any sleep over it, the idea that Eurekaweek might not take place was a nightmare during the day.\u201d Engels stressed that \u2018especially in these difficult times\u2019 it is very important for students to seek support. \u201cAnd peer support<\/em> is crucial!\u201d<\/p>\n

Eureka Live<\/h2>

The opening of Eurekaweek is the first broadcast of the Eureka Live programme, which will be broadcast at 8pm every weekday on a website that can only be accessed by participants.<\/p>\n\n\t
