Being a Eurekaweek guide is an honour, even in times of coronavirus. No, there won\u2019t be a biercantus<\/em> (beer choir sing-along) this year, nor long nights during which group leaders drag their groups from one party to the next, nor a huge event at the Ahoy centre featuring thousands of students. So, yes, things will be different this year. Even so, group leaders Wolke Verkerk and Celine Steinkamp are looking forward to the event.<\/p>\n

Celine and Wolke will be out and about for two days during this year\u2019s induction week. Due to unavoidable last-minute changes to the composition of the various groups, pairs of group leaders will supervise two groups this year. The first-year students will be treated to one \u2018offline day\u2019 featuring activities for which they will meet in person, and will spend the remaining days hanging out together online. \u201cWe\u2019ll try to come up with some fun questions to ask the first-year students,\u201d Celine tells us. \u201cIf you only ask people \u2018What\u2019s your name?\u2019, things may get awkward on Zoom. Thankfully, we\u2019re both very outgoing and sociable, so we\u2019ll be just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t

\n\t\t\u2018Questions like, do you actually have a life outside your studies?\u2019 \u2013 things like that\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Celine and Wolke, who both study tax law, have been watching the opportunities for large parties and huge get-togethers dwindle in Rotterdam for the last few months. They are actually pleasantly surprised that they will be allowed to meet the freshers in person at all, albeit for one day only. Of course, it is a pity that this year\u2019s Eurekaweek won\u2019t be the same as previous editions.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s particularly sad for Wolke. Celine took part in the Eurekaweek activities when she was a fresher, and was a group leader last year as well. However, for Wolke, the 2020 Eurekaweek was going to be her first. As a first-year student, she chose not to attend the activities so that she could go on holiday instead. \u201cI do somewhat regret that. I keep hearing all these stories \u2013 like people telling me they had a great time at the beer choir sing-along.\u201d But, says Wolke, she wanted to become a group leader so as to be able to help first-year students, and she can still do that, coronavirus or not.<\/p>\n\n\t
