When and why do academics use their titles? Some people do so consistently, while others hardly ever do it. Mineke Bosch (a professor of modern history at Groningen University) found that women are less likely than men to use their titles because they tend to be more modest about their achievements. \u201cThat\u2019s commonly known.\u201d Philosopher Stine Jensen recently received a large number of reactions when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/stine-jensen-2448a6a_groot-interview-met-stine-jensen-meebewegen-activity-6665296711100973056-xwaz\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cGenerally, I don\u2019t use my title. I either don\u2019t think it\u2019s necessary, or it looks like I\u2019m bragging. But then I heard Prof. Mineke Bosch\u2019s rather compelling argument for women doing so, anyway. Show them what you\u2019ve got. Don\u2019t make yourself smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inequality in the way academics are addressed<\/h2><p>As far as that is concerned, Bosch was not just referring to titles. \u201cI was also referring to the huge inequality in the way men and women are addressed. Women are addressed by their first name only, whereas men are addressed by their surname. I\u2019ve always noticed that, and I dislike it.\u201d For instance, she engendered a debate in the editorial board of the Dutch Biographical Dictionary regarding the fact that gender was only indicated in entries on women. \u201cMen are referred to by their title, while women are referred to as \u2018Mrs\u2019 First Name. I wanted to change that but ran into a lot of opposition. It\u2019s quite the complicated operation. People just aren\u2019t used to that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018We\u2019re done with all of that. From now on, we will formally address each other\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>She remembers her own source of inspiration when she was a student attending Groningen University. \u201cProfessor Else Barth, an analytic philosopher, came to the university to teach lectures. She was very aware of language and how it was used. Right away she organised a series of seminars entitled \u2018Sexist Paradigm in Philosophy\u2019, which I attended. Initially we all addressed each other very informally and called her \u2018Else\u2019, until one day she entered the room and said: \u2018We\u2019re done with all of that. From now on, I\u2019ll be \u2018Professor Barth\u2019, and you will formally address each other.\u2019 She\u2019d overheard students in the library, talking about the philosopher Ger Harmsen, and they\u2019d sounded very respectful, always calling him \u2018Professor Harmsen\u2019. That\u2019s when the penny dropped for her: democratisation is fine, but not if it only affects women.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forms of address<\/h2><p>She herself would rather not use her title unless absolutely necessary. \u201cI hardly ever use it outside academia. It\u2019s pointless. I\u2019m not having anyone call me \u2018Professor\u2019 either, and I sign everything using my first name and surname. But if my students say \u2018Hi Mineke\u2019 when they see me or write to me, I do teach them a little lesson on forms of address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says that when lectures and conferences are announced, men are often announced by their title, while women continue to be announced by their first name. \u201cIt\u2019s a good example of women being reduced to women, while men are considered the universal category. It\u2019s a long-standing gender pattern.\u201d The solution, she feels, lies in never failing to address the matter. \u201cAnd it shouldn\u2019t only be women doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No scientific research has been conducted in the Netherlands on the differences in the ways in which male and female academics are addressed. An American <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/work\/1763651\/why-it-matters-when-people-ignore-a-womans-title\/\">study<\/a> conducted at American medical schools in 2017 confirmed that women are less likely to be announced by their title, particularly by their male colleagues.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showing off your title<\/h2><p>Talitha Stam was awarded a doctorate in September 2018. \u201cSince then I\u2019ve used my title for work-related matters. For instance, in my e-mail signature and on LinkedIn, where I made a conscious decision to put it in front of my name. I\u2019m not seeing enough women of colour with a Doctor title, neither in the Netherlands nor abroad. Ever since I got my PhD, I\u2019ve received a lot of responses from people of colour, telling me that they think it\u2019s great I have that title and they feel I should flaunt it more.\u201d Initially, she wasn\u2019t sure if she should show off her title. \u201cBut if you\u2019ve got it, why make yourself smaller? If people don\u2019t see a particular thing, they\u2019ll think it doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018? If people don\u2019t see a particular thing, they\u2019ll think it doesn\u2019t exist\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>She does not use her title on other social media. \u201cTake Facebook, for instance. The conversations I have there are more personal. I don\u2019t think it even says where I work. Whereas when I talk on LinkedIn, it\u2019s generally related to my position or field of expertise.\u201d As far as she is concerned, it\u2019s something people of colour, in particular, should take up. \u201cIn my particular generation, you\u2019ll find more female than male PhD students \u2013 for instance, at our department. There aren\u2019t many PhD students of colour, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gratuitous nonsense<\/h2><p>Sohail Wahedi was awarded a doctorate in November. Since then he has hardly used his title. \u201cNot in my daily communications. I\u2019ve heard some stories about people who will send Christmas cards to others and sign them Dr So-and-So. That sort of gratuitous nonsense doesn\u2019t do anything for me. I didn\u2019t do a PhD to be able to put my title on postcards. Least of all since my research was paid for by the hard-earned money of tax-payers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He does use his title when he writes letters of recommendation for his students, or sometimes when he is applying for an opportunity to present his study results. \u201cAnd then I\u2019ll only do it on EUR letterhead. I make a point of not doing it in the academic articles I\u2019ve published since being awarded my doctorate, and I don\u2019t do it in my e-mails or on LinkedIn, either. I don\u2019t want to use my title so as to be known as hard-working Doctor So-and-So who knows everything about everything.\u201d He doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s his duty to present himself as a role model, being a PhD graduate from a diverse cultural background. \u201cI\u2019m not the Messiah, nor another latter-day saint. Things that worked for me may not work the same way for others. I simply want to present myself, and hopefully serve as a role model to my fellow human beings because of my skills as an academic rather than because of my cultural or religious background or political affiliations.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hard to strike the right balance<\/h2><p>For her part, Tina van der Vlies was also awarded a doctorate in November, after which she did edit her e-mail signature. \u201cOther than that, I hardly ever use my title. I don\u2019t use it in private correspondence, and I don\u2019t use it on Facebook or LinkedIn, either.\u201d Her profile on the latter network does mention that she has a PhD. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t change my name. If people are interested, my profile will tell them that I have a PhD, and also what I was awarded it for. I do think it would be weird to present myself as \u2018Dr Tina van der Vlies\u2019 there. I\u2019d feel I was laying it on too thick if I did. I\u2019d probably think, Tina, don\u2019t exaggerate. At the same time, I wouldn\u2019t actually think that if I saw other people do it, so maybe I\u2019m wrong. I think it\u2019s hard to strike the right balance. You have to be careful not to be the only person not using a title, or to forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018I wish none of us would use our titles\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>Van der Vlies does use her title in work-related matters. \u201cI\u2019d use it if I were to apply for a job, and I\u2019ll put it on the course syllabus when I\u2019m teaching a course. At the moment I\u2019m busy organising the Historians\u2019 Days, a major history conference that will be held in Rotterdam in August 2021. As far as that\u2019s concerned, it can be easier to use my title every once in a while, to show that I\u2019m well read in a particular subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says there are plenty of men at EUR who don\u2019t flaunt their titles every opportunity they get. \u201cI wish none of us would use our titles. But that\u2019s not the world we live in, so we should use them where relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/persons\" class=\"mt-6 md:mt-8 lg:mt-10\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"sr-only\">De
