Why don&#8217;t <em>you<\/em> do it?!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science is not interested in &#8216;muscular language&#8217; when it comes to helping the cultural sector and students. She believes it&#8217;s too early for commitments. While the government is actively implementing measures for other sectors, it seems that, when it comes to students, the minister wants to check whether it&#8217;s really true that loss of income and having little money go hand in hand. Luckily, students were in great financial shape these last few years. Right? Or weren&#8217;t they? Another that you had to fight to find any accommodation that you could afford. Add to that a VAT increase and apathy by the (local) government towards the problem of slum landlords and you\u2019ve got a pretty good idea of the situation. Finally, add a \u2018social\u2019 system of loans instead of a basic grant and you\u2019ve created the perfect cocktail to shake the very foundations of the student\u2019s financial position for years to come.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Binding study advice<\/h2><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read more<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2020\/04\/30\/minister-doesnt-intend-to-refund-tuition-fees\/\">Minister doesn&#8217;t intend to refund tuition fees<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/04\/24\/heavy-workloads-and-burnouts-are-like-a-many-headed-monster\/\">Heavy workloads and burnouts are like a \u2018many-headed monster\u2019<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>By now the health crisis has been compounded by the associated financial stress, but still the minister believes the time for measures has not yet come. It was already evident that the minister lacks decisiveness: in 2018 Van Engelshoven promised to lower the norm of the binding study advice from sixty to forty points, but in that same year it was announced that she had changed her mind. That the reason for lowering the norm in the first place was the growing concern about the mental welfare of students apparently did not make a difference to her.<\/p>\n<p>Have we seen any structural measures from the ministry to address that welfare in the meantime? It\u2019s an easy guess. If we were to follow Van Engelshoven\u2019s example and use cheap metaphors to mask our lack of ideas and decisiveness, we might say that instead of discussing \u2018muscular language\u2019, it would be better for the minister to \u2018get off the pot\u2019. It seems there\u2019s little to be optimistic about, but is there anything that can be done?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invest in yourself<\/h2><p>One course of action that the minister is not afraid to put forward is to \u2018simply\u2019 increase your monthly loan from the government. The fact that this was already an option before the crisis and therefore isn\u2019t a response to it at all is something we might have to forget about for the moment; there is a word limit to this opinion piece. This \u2018nice\u2019 gesture is symptomatic of something that students have been dealing with for a number of years now: the adage \u2018invest in yourself\u2019. In a time where everyone\u2019s constantly appealing to mutual solidarity, the message to students is that they can sort it out themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that, as a university student, I am subsequently (and rightly) asked to address complex societal issues such as poverty is as tragic as it is ironic. It\u2019s quite the double whammy: knocking someone down and then resenting them for not helping others to get up. Students are to act like Baron Munchausen and pigtail themselves from the carefully created financial swamp. A generation of students was raised on the idea that concepts of solidarity and investing mainly concern the self. Subsequently we will ask ourselves where our values have gone and why we feel such a lack of community.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No black hole<\/h2><p>It completely goes against the plea for more mutual solidarity. Every euro that\u2019s spent on a student doesn\u2019t disappear into some black hole, but rather helps the student to focus on other things than just financial worries in the coming years, such as complex societal issues. Society is suffering.<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018Maybe at that time, we\u2019ll wistfully look back at this period, a period in which we missed the opportunity to invest in, and declare solidarity to, one another\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>How will this generation of students deal with a call for solidarity in the future? I can already imagine the confused faces when the topic of mutual solidarity will be brought up: \u2018Solidarity with others? I have had to invest in myself for years, what do other people have to do with me? I can\u2019t let myself down right now. After all, I\u2019ve been the one taking care of me.\u2019 Maybe at that time, we\u2019ll wistfully look back at this period, a period in which we missed the opportunity to invest in, and declare solidarity to, one another. Or will we then be able to withdraw that solidarity and sense of community from a DUO bank account somewhere?<\/p>\n<p><em>Florian Wijker is a Philosophy student and member of the University
