Dutch Education Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven wants to prevent an excessive influx of the number of international students. Today she defends her plans in the Dutch House of Representatives. Ahead of this debate, here are some facts and opinions to put things in perspective.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands is a favourite study destination for international students: almost 86,000 internationals are currently enrolled<\/a> in full Bachelor\u2019s or Master\u2019s programmes at Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences. They represent no less than 11.6 percent of all students, a figure that has doubled over the past ten years. Most international students come from Germany, closely followed by Italian, Chinese, Belgian and UK nationals.<\/p>\n

At the EUR, nearly six thousand international students make up for around 20 percent of the total number of students. With regard to that share, the EUR is in the middle bracket nationwide. The University of Maastricht is number one, while the University of Amsterdam is in the second place.<\/p>\n

The most popular study programmes include International Business, Psychology and Business Administration. English is the language of instruction for a relatively large number of Master\u2019s degree programmes: 25.3 percent at universities of applied sciences and 69.2 percent at universities.<\/p>\n
