Drop<\/h2>\n

EM periodically tests typical Dutch food with help of international students under the name of \u2018Dutch Delight\u2019. This edition, MSc Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship student Natia Nozadze from Georgia tastes and reviews Echte volzoete Scheepsknopen Drop.<\/p>\n

The product<\/b><\/p>\n

Drop is typically being made by extracting the juice of the root of liquorice. Later on, sugar and sal ammoniac are added, giving it the typical drop taste. In order to give the drop a more solid bite, Arabic gum is added to the mix. Historically, The Netherlands is among the top with regard to production \u00e1nd consumption of drop in the world.<\/p>\n

The Review<\/b><\/p>\n

At first glance, Natia remarks that the drop is very dark-colored. \u201cLike a chocolate\u201d, she adds. \u201cMaybe it tastes a bit bitter?\u201d <\/p>\n

Very briefly after Natia takes her first bite, she notes \u2013 with a slight chuckle \u2013 that the drop piece is \u201ca bit hard to chew\u201d. This quickly changes to \u201creally hard to chew\u201d, when Natia isn\u2019t able to finish the first piece of drop after a minute. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot a traditional candy\u201d, Natia summarizes her experience afterwards in one sentence. \u201cIt\u2019s not bitter as I expected, but instead it has some herbal taste. You have those liquors with a similar taste.\u201d<\/p>\n

Natia thinks it\u2019s quite odd that drop is completely black. \u201cIt\u2019s not appealing to eat\u201d, she remarks.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s even darker than the darkest chocolate\u201d. To the question whether she would buy them again, she answers: \u201cIf it would be a mix of different colors maybe. Completely black? Maybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n
