The purpose of this new code of conduct is to make student life as fun and safe as possible, explained EUR\u2019s Rector Magnificus Rutger Engels during its official presentation. The university has drawn up the code in consultation with a number of student organisations.<\/p>\n

The code of conduct for the associations\u2019 initiation programmes is very detailed as far as what is and isn\u2019t allowed. In contrast, the newly-presented code mainly focuses on general standards and values \u2013 stating, among other things, that associations need to ensure that all their members are treated equally.<\/p>\n

Safe and positive<\/h2>

The key focal points of the new code of conduct are \u2018safety\u2019 and \u2018positive behaviour\u2019. For example, student associations need to \u2018create a safe environment for their members\u2019 and \u2018are not allowed to encourage socially unacceptable behaviour or damage the position of the university and the organisation during their activities\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe code is important for both individual students and student organisations,\u201d say Merel van Lunen, president of the Rotterdam Chamber of Associations (RKvV). \u201cWhile our organisations may be very different, we will all benefit from the guidelines provided by the standards and values set out in this code.\u201d<\/p>\n

No signature required<\/h2>

The code of conduct was drawn up at the initiative of both the university and the student organisations. \u201cWe already have a code in place for the orientation period,\u201d notes an EUR spokesperson. \u201cBut there was a need on both sides for a code that could be referred to throughout the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The code of conduct applies to 90 student organisations in Rotterdam, including various cultural associations and sports clubs. The university has asked Friederieke Hoitink of Studium Generale to serve as an informal intermediary. Students and student associations can turn to her with any questions they may have \u2013 or if they have an issue within their organisation, for example.<\/p>\n

The student organisations won\u2019t be required to sign the code of conduct: it applies to them with or without a signature. \u201cYou automatically agree to comply with the code if your organisation is recognised and registered by the university,\u201d according to an EUR spokesperson.<\/p>\n
