Put in working weeks of over 50 hours without any kind of financial compensation. This is a grim reality for some 4,000 medical students working on rotation, who have difficulty keeping body and soul together. They\u2019re fed up with the situation and are campaigning for a reimbursement.<\/p>\n

A spatula, pencil or kebab skewer. Last week, it didn\u2019t matter which wooden object medical students held up to the camera exactly, as long as they broke it in two, filmed it and posted the clip on social media under the hashtag #breekeenlansvoordeco. Through this playful protest, they are calling<\/a> \u2013 together with physicians and other sympathisers \u2013 for a reimbursement for all student doctors. It didn\u2019t take long before their stunt was trending on social media.<\/p>\n

Long hours<\/h2>

At present, around 4,000 medical students working on rotation at a general hospital aren\u2019t reimbursed for their time. \u201cAs student doctors, we aim to gain as much experience as possible and we\u2019re happy to contribute to patient care. Which is why we have no problem working long hours, doing night shifts or working weekends and holidays,\u201d says Amir Abdelmoumen, president of the interest group De Geneeskundestudent.<\/p>\n

But this heavy study load does mean that most students can forget about a job on the side. At the same time, they\u2019re required to pay an annual tuition fee of some 2,000 euro during their two years on clinical rotation. \u201cFinancial support from your parents is almost a prerequisite. Which doesn\u2019t make the programme particularly accessible for a lot of people,\u201d notes Abdelmoumen.<\/p>\n
