In a room on campus Woudestein, Ana Uribe Sandoval, chair of the ESHCC faculty council, is leading a staff meeting about the future of her faculty. She asks questions; staff can submit their answers anonymously. What do you think about the merger? What are your concerns? All the answers pop up on the project screen.<\/p>\n<p>Then something unexpected happens. At the last question \u2013 what wishes do you have for a possible merger? \u2013 some people present continue to send responses to the screen. Two words, always the same. After a few seconds, these are displayed in bright colours in the middle of the screen: \u201cNo Dymph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such acrimonious incidents are no exception at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). There\u2019s a culture of fear in the department, say faculty staff. According to insiders, it had been clear for a while: the faculty\u2019s management team wanted to shelve the merger advice.<\/p>\n<p>They got their way. The merger didn\u2019t go ahead and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/05\/29\/eshcc-interim-dean-resigns-with-immediate-effect\/\">Van den Boom left<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/featured-text\" class=\"md:mt-6 p-4 md:p-6 lg:p-8 bg-sand-300 theme-sand:bg-white theme-violet:bg-white theme-mocha:bg-white wysiwyg *:last:mb-0!\" >\n\t\t<p><strong>Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this article, we spoke to 21 current and former staff members from Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Amsterdam. This article was written in consultation with\u00a0<em>Folia<\/em>, the platform for independent journalism at the University of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<p>In March 2018, Van den Boom, former rector magnificus at the University of Amsterdam, is appointed interim dean at the ESHCC faculty for a year and a half. A reliable administrator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eur.nl\/nieuws\/profdrdymph-van-den-boom-interim-decaan-eshcc\">according to the Executive Board<\/a>, with a multidisciplinary background and a pleasant personality. The board calls her a \u2018bridge builder\u2019 who will make the faculty \u2018more robust\u2019. However, the faculty\u2019s management team does not welcome the arrival of Van den Boom due to the lack of consultation.<\/p>\n<p>With around two hundred academic staff, the ESHCC is one of the smaller faculties at Erasmus University. For years, the faculty has been characterised by high pressure of work and financial vulnerability. A merger with the Erasmus School of Social and Behaviour Sciences (ESSB) is mooted.<\/p>\n<p>These small departments can\u2019t do much alone. A small faculty has a weaker position of power among big faculties like Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus MC and the Rotterdam School of Management.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vulnerable<\/h2><p>On her appointment, Van den Boom was tasked with exploring future scenarios for ESHCC. The faculty could continue to operate independently or merge with another faculty. Consecutive Executive Boards have felt that something had to happen, says Professor of Sociology Liesbet van Zoonen (dean of the graduate school of the ESHCC, the ESSB and the ESPhil).\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a vulnerable faculty; even the department of communication studies at the University of Amsterdam is bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There had previously been talk of <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/2014\/12\/04\/decaan-faculteit-wijsbegeerte-is-geen-haalbare-kaart\/\">a merger with the philosophy faculty<\/a><\/u>, but there had been a lot of resistance to that idea. The merger did not go ahead.<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018There was immediate concern in the faculty about what Van den Boom had actually come to do\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>Van den Boom completed her investigation in March of this year. In her report, she expresses a preference for a merger between the ESHCC and the ESSB. The plans are extremely unpopular. The fields are too different, according to the opposition, they have different visions and would get in each other\u2019s way. The editing team of <em>EM<\/em>\u00a0finds an anonymous tip in its post box. It was addressed: \u201c<em>Dear editors of EM.\u201d <\/em>It continued: \u201c<em>We have found out that the interim dean of ESHCC committed plagiarism in her advice. The attachment shows the details. It is a case of straightforward copying and repeated failure to include sources.\u201d <\/em>The writers of the letter report that this is a serious breach of academic integrity. Five A4s with highlighted yellow texts are enclosed. On the left side there are texts from the merger report, on the right side texts from, among others, the World Economic Forum or from the Berkeley University site. The texts are identical. The letter ends with <em>\u2018Sincerely yours, The Integrity Squad\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After consulting an integrity expert, EM decided not to write about the tip. According to the expert, although there is plagiarism in the advice, it is not of a sufficiently serious nature that it would lead to sanctions against Van den Boom. In the eyes of the editors, Van den Boom would disproportionately be damaged by a publication. The four-member MT consists of department heads Maria Grever, Susanne Janssen, Filip Vermeylen and education director Jeroen Jansz.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing the claim about the advisory report, the MT does not consult interim dean Van den Boom, but immediately submits a request to action to the university\u2019s Executive Board. The <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/06\/controversial-merger-advice-by-van-den-boom-contains-plagiarism-as-well\/\">board rejects this<\/a><\/u>, but asks Van den Boom to produce a new version of the advice in which the missing sources have been added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Poisoned atmosphere\u2019<\/h2><p>Several professors feel don\u2019t see any issues with the alleged \u2018plagiarism\u2019: this isn\u2019t an academic piece of work, so it\u2019s \u2018completely irrelevant\u2019 for Van den Boom\u2019s position, says Professor of Social and Economic History Hein Klemann. \u201cShe was here as an administrator, not an academic. Opponents of the merger played very dirty.\u201d Another member of the faculty staff says that \u2018you don\u2019t do this if you\u2019re colleagues\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to faculty staff, this is typical. Within parts of the ESHCC, there\u2019s a \u2018culture of fear\u2019 and a \u2018poisoned atmosphere\u2019, they claim. Even before the appointment of Van den Boom, the MT was set on opposing any merger. Filip Vermeylen, Professor of Global Art Markets and member of the MT, says in a response that he \u2018tried to take a constructive approach\u2019. \u201cBut we had a different view about the merger. There are people who talk about a \u2018friendly and polite atmosphere\u2019 with \u2018some disagreements, but these were always resolved\u2019. The problems therefore don\u2019t apply to the entire faculty, staff emphasise. Van den Boom decides \u2013 with the knowledge of the Executive Board \u2013 to talk to various groups of up to four staff members in the Novotel Rotterdam Brainpark. She decides to do this because she feels that people aren\u2019t willing to talk freely about the merger and the culture at the faculty in their own department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was quite surprised that she\u2019d decided to do that,\u201d Vermeylen says. According to Susanne Janssen, Professor of Sociology of Media &amp; Culture and also member of the MT, these conversations \u2018caused a lot of unrest\u2019. \u201cStaff felt they were rather ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018The faculty council put under pressure? Possibly, but not by me. I know nothing about that\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>According to various faculty staff members, unease grows when Grever, who planned to retire in the autumn, requests Van den Boom to delay her retirement date. Her request was refused. \u201cGrever was furious,\u201d says Klamer. \u201cShe wanted to fight tooth and nail for her research centre, which she\u2019d built up herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MT member Janssen sees it differently, she says later in a conversation. \u201cAs the management team, we\u2019d said: it\u2019s not a good idea for Grever to leave in November before a review has been completed. She was asked to stay longer, which initially she didn\u2019t want to do. Eventually she was persuaded to stay.\u201d After Van den Boom leaves, the rector decides that Grever can stay longer. \u201cI regret that fact that there\u2019s now the suggestion that she did it for herself,\u201d says Janssen. \u201cBy doing that, she\u2019s demonstrating a great sense of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pressure<\/h2><p>Three academics\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/02\/25\/majority-of-eshcc-staff-oppose-merger-with-essb\/\">decide to write a letter to the Executive Board of Erasmus University against the merger<\/a><\/u>. This is signed by 121 members of staff. The MT put faculty staff under pressure to sign this letter, say several professors. Staff worried about their position and feared the consequences, say insiders. For example, faculty council chair Ana Uribe Sandoval was asked by education director Jeroen Jansz why she hadn\u2019t signed it yet. She fobs him off by saying that the council wants to adopt a neutral position and that she doesn\u2019t need to explain herself to him. \u201cHe then asked me: why can\u2019t we work together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the MT put pressure on the faculty council, Janssen says: \u201cI think that\u2019s very unlikely. At least, I didn\u2019t.\u201d Vermeylen adds: \u201cI did have a phone conversation with someone. He asked me: what are the arguments against the merger? And then you calmly explain. That\u2019s not putting anyone under pressure, is it? We\u2019re all academics, we can form our own opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smear campaign<\/h2><p>There\u2019s been talk of a \u2018smear campaign\u2019 against Van den Boom, say several members of staff. \u201cI felt that the process was becoming increasingly personal. The substantive business discussion ended up as a personal vendetta\u201d, says Professor of International Business History Ben Wubs, who was also present at the staff meeting with the word cloud in April. \u201cThey just wanted to humiliate her. I felt it was terribly childish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MT is inside a bubble, say insiders. They think: if we fight as hard as we can against the outside world, then nothing will happen to us. Wubs: \u201cVery stupid, because ultimately the Executive Board takes all the decisions. I\u2019d expect smarter actions from people with a PhD.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of April, Dymph van den Boom takes a seat at a table in the chic American Hotel on Leidseplein in Amsterdam. Opposite her is\u00a0<em>NRC<\/em> journalist Frank van Kolfschooten, who has studied her scientific publications and speeches. His conclusion: Van den Boom committed plagiarism in nine university speeches and in her thesis from 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Van den Boom responds calmly. He claimed that she did the same in her 1988 thesis.<\/li>\n<li>According to Van den Boom, plagiarism rules of today are now being retrospectively applied to her thesis. She says that she complied with the rules of back then.<\/li>\n<li>Van den Boom finds support from Professor <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folia.nl\/actueel\/130118\/integriteitsexpert-dit-is-regelrechte-karaktermoord-op-van-den-boom\">Lex Bouter<\/a><\/u> and emeritus professor\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folia.nl\/actueel\/130194\/emeritus-hoogleraar-schuyt-in-nrc-inadequaat-verwijzen-is-geen-plagiaat\">Kees Schuyt<\/a><\/u>, experts in integrity rules.<\/li>\n<li>Van den Boom says that she didn\u2019t write her speeches alone, but together with the communication department. However, the University of Amsterdam denies in\u00a0<em>NRC<\/em>that text writers contributed.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/05\/plagiarism-in-work-of-departing-dean-dymph-van-den-boom\/\">University of Amsterdam set up a two-member committee<\/a> to investigate the academic integrity of Van den Boom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<p>She will meet Van Kolfschooten on two occasions. Later, when she sees the article for publication, she talks to Professor Klamer of a \u2018ruinous article\u2019. \u201cShe was absolutely shocked,\u201d he says. \u201cI call this character assassination. Or better: intellectual murder, because now she is unable to work in academia anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several professors and deans, who had heard about the case in advance, sent a letter to the newspaper to stop publication of the article. They regard it as a \u2018settlement of a feud\u2019, one of them says. In the letter, they point to members of the MT. The newspaper sends an e-mail saying that the article has \u2018no relationship with her advice about the faculty of history, culture and communication\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too coincidental<\/h2><p>The writers of the letter think they know more: someone wanted to trip Van den Boom up. The timing was too good; this was too coincidental. And furthermore, the professors and deans write in the letter: \u201cIf a violation is suspected, a complaint should be submitted to the local Academic Integrity Committee.\u201d They conclude: \u201cThrough these serious accusations, the article resembles an \u2018assassination\u2019. The intention is to discredit Van den Boom as an academic, seriously damage her reputation and thus shelve her advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On 28 May Dymph van den Boom announced that she was resigning as interim dean with immediate effect. Her departure comes as a bolt from the blue. There is no successor and no official farewell has been planned.<\/p>\n<p>Just under a week later, <em>NRC<\/em>\u00a0headlines with:\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.nl\/nieuws\/2019\/06\/03\/wie-imiteert-valt-door-de-mand-a3962469\">\u2018How the former rector of the University of Amsterdam committed plagiarism in speeches and thesis\u2019<\/a><\/u>. Academic journalist Frank van Kolfschooten writes about plagiarism in nine of her university speeches and in her 1988 thesis. It is unclear how he stumbled on this subject. \u201cMore or less by accident when I was Googling Dymph van den Boom and I found one of her speeches on the Internet,\u201d says Van Kolfschooten\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.nl\/nieuws\/2019\/06\/04\/hoe-de-rector-van-de-uva-plagiaat-pleegde-a3962486\">in a podcast<\/a><\/u>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>NRC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intimidation and manipulation<\/h2><p>Twelve members of the academic staff from History, including Professors Wubs and Klemann,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/24\/twelve-history-staff-members-withdraw-confidence-in-eshcc-heads\/\">write in a statement on 17 June<\/a>\u00a0to the Executive Board about intimidation, manipulation, non-transparent decision-making and unauthorised pressure on the faculty. In addition, interim dean Van den Boom had been removed for \u2018political reasons\u2019. \u201cThere is proof that the campaign against Dymph started inside the faculty,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/quote\" class=\"align\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t<figure data-component=\"quote-with-author\" class=\"@container\">\n\t<blockquote class=\"text-md italic @2xl:text-xl @4xl:text-2xl text-purple\">\n\t\t\u2018There is evidence that the campaign against Dymph started within the faculty\u2019\n\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>The signatories lose confidence in the faculty\u2019s management team \u2013 including their own department head Maria Grever. About her they say: Grever \u2018shouldn\u2019t be involved in this at all [\u2026] due to the manipulative, intimidating behaviour and her focus on her own gain\u2019. The signatories ask the Executive Board to dismiss the management team and appoint a new team that communicates transparently \u2018to heal the deep divides that exist within the faculty\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Merger off the table<\/h2><p>In the same week, the Executive Board\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/21\/eshcc-essb-merger-off-the-table\/\">announces<\/a><\/u> that it has postponed the merger plans. \u201cDespite wide support within Erasmus University for the ambition to create a stronger cluster of Social Sciences and Philosophy and a broad desire to intensify the cooperation between both faculties, based on the advice of the faculty councils, the Executive Board concludes that achieving a formal merger would not currently benefit this shared ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/24\/frank-van-der-duijn-schouten-new-eshcc-interim\/\">also appoints a new interim dean<\/a><\/u>: Frank van der Duijn Schouten. The board praises him as a \u2018bridge builder\u2019, exactly the same term they used over a year ago to mark the arrival of Van den Boom.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of July, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/24\/university-starts-cultural-investigation-at-eshcc\/\">an independent research bureau embarks on a \u2018culture survey\u2019 on behalf of the Executive Board<\/a><\/u> in response to signals of \u2018tensions and division\u2019. \u201cThis will give everyone better insight into the current organisation culture and with that knowledge we can embark on a process to work better together where necessary and increase mutual trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Out of control\u2019<\/h2><p>A communications staff member from another faculty who wishes to remain anonymous complains about the attitude of the Executive Board. \u201cThe rector\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmusmagazine.nl\/en\/2019\/06\/13\/rector-shocked-about-van-den-boom-plagiarism-article\/\">said in\u00a0<em>EM<\/em><\/a><\/u>\u00a0that he found the issue \u2018problematic\u2019,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m amazed that they didn\u2019t publicly come out with a statement earlier. They should have sympathised with Van den Boom and said that this should have taken an official route. This attitude is typical of an unsafe working environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Zoonen calls it \u2018sad that it has gotten so out of control.\u2019 \u201cConstant lack of finance and fierce competition lead to a culture of every man for himself \u2013 we know that from all universities,\u201d she says. \u201cApparently the pressure becomes so high that you mercilessly just humiliate someone. This isn\u2019t how universities foster good academics,\u201d she concludes. \u201cOr nice people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Susanne Janssen and Filip Vermeylen talked to us on behalf of the management team. Jeroen Jansz and Maria Grever did not want to comment. Janssen and Vermeylen say that they do not recognise themselves in the description of intimidation, culture of fear, manipulation or a \u2018smear campaign\u2019 against Van den Boom. \u2018Such unfounded accusations are hurtful,\u2019 Janssen says. \u2018We don\u2019t understand it or recognise it. It\u2019s damaging for the faculty and for the two inspections that are due. I don\u2019t know what people want to achieve by this.\u2019 Vermeylen: \u2018If this is how they feel, there\u2019s an integrity coordinator or an ombudsman. That\u2019s the great thing about a university, that you have these institutions. We really have no idea about concrete complaints in that respect. It\u2019s in everybody\u2019s interest that people are able to work in a safe environment.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They both strongly deny having spoken to the NRC\u00a0about the plagiarism issue. Nor can they imagine their colleagues Jansz or Grever having done so. Janssen says she finds it \u2018tragic\u2019 to learn that the article about Van den Boom was published in the newspaper.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\t<div data-name=\"acf\/posts-list\" >\n\t\t\n\t\t<div
