In this workshop by Studium Generale, you’ll be at the steering wheel of one of these algorithms under the guidance of dr. João Goncalves (ESHCC). He will teach you, in an understandable way, how to create a recommendation algorithm and tweak it yourself. How does recommendation work? What data is used to find out what you might click on? And what are the implications of the decision the algorithm makes for you and society at large? You will find out how your online life is guided more by lines of code than you might think. What’s more, you’ll only need a phone or laptop to participate!

João Gonçalves is assistant professor in the department Media and Communication of the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. His research focusses on the interaction between artificial intelligence, politics, and society. For this workshop he will make use of algorithms he created himself.
