In any case, it shows how heredity has come to play a role in our daily lives and even in our use of words. But how big a role does it really play? Does it make us better, or perhaps more importantly, happier? What role does genetics play in society and vice versa? Can society even influence what happens in genetics or is it all scientific ivory tower work? What do we need to understand in order to have a say, and more importantly, to have a say?
These questions will be addressed during the Science Café given by Dr. Fred Petrij.
Dr. Fred Petrij is a clinical geneticist and associate professor at Erasmus MC. Over the years his focus, in addition to patient care for people with hereditary questions, has increasingly shifted to providing education, not only for his own discipline but also for medical education in Rotterdam in general. He won several teaching awards for this.
