But what does that mean: improving yourself? Who are you doing it for, and why? For yourself, or for society? And why do we want that? What is the best way to understand the functioning of health- and fitnessapps: as a form of self-development, or as a sort of  discipline from outside? Professor Huijer uses three philosophical trends to discuss how the role of these health apps can be approached, how these apps design contemporary self image, and what the alternatives are.
