“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question we are all asked from a very young age. It seems like work is what should define us as people. Controlling all aspects of our life even before we actually start doing it. Our whole education system is even set up to prepare us for the workforce, not necessarily the knowledge studying provides itself. During this event, sociologist Marguerite van den Berg will therefore talk about her book “Werk Is Geen Oplossing” (Work Is Not a Solution). Because, as she states, our lives are far too geared towards work. Can striking be an act of resistance to break its control over us? And what can you do to not fall into the trap of work? This and more will be discussed during the event.
Dr. Marguerite van den Berg is Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam. She is specialized in sociological research on work, the city, and gender. In 2021, her book “Work Is Not a Solution” was published. During this lecture and discussion-evening she will tell us about the problem of work, after which we will discuss ways to change this situation. Visitors are invited to share their opinions and experiences in doing so.
