What do you do when you don’t belong anywhere? When you desire a connection with the world around you, but you fail, over and over. In Dark Paradise, eleven individuals are fighting a battle against loneliness. Isolated from one another they crave structure, recognition and – most of all – contact. Will they manage to break out of isolation? Will they find their way back to human contact?
Dark Paradise is a dance film choreographed by Yannick Wagenaar and directed by Justin Bekker. The social consequences of lockdown everyone had to endure were the inspiration and starting point for this production. On repetitive techno beats and melancholic soundscapes eleven dancers were challenged to research their own memories of the past two years. The result is an energetic and emotional cinematic experience that explores human resilience. Whether you’re a dance lover or not, everyone will recognize themselves in this journey that shows our darkness, desires and strengths.
After the screening, choreographer Yannick Wagenaar will join us for a Q&A moderated by Débora Póvoa (ESHCC lecturer of the course Arts, Culture and Media and one of the dancers in Dark Paradise). In this conversation, they will discuss the creative process behind Dark Paradise and reflect on broader issues at the intersection of media and cultural production, such as the possibilities that film offers to capture dance and how new technologies impact artistic production.
Dark Paradise is a production of 010 DANCE Programm, a Rotterdam-based dance community.
