Jack and Charley are head-over-heels in love with their girlfriends — Kitty and Amy. Their proposals can wait no longer, but as the girls are invited over to their apartment for the final soul-stirring conversation, the two friends find out that their promised chaperone — Charley’s aunt from Brazil, “where the nuts come from” — is no longer arriving in England. Instead, they turn to their friend Babbs to play the part of the aunt — not so masterfully but nevertheless, quite believably, leading to a scene of absolute chaos.
Most plays of the Victorian epoch teach you friendship, honor, and romance in a manner full of grace and dignity. “Charley’s Aunt” makes it better, serving you all these valuable life lessons with a dollop of laugh- out-loud comedy. No better way to spend a cold winter evening!
