According to a recent PWC report commissioned by the VSNU, higher education has been underfunded for years. Mainly due to the increase in the number of students, the contribution from the state per student has dropped from around 20,000 to 16,000 euros.
Although a package of 8.5 billion euros was recently allocated to education, this is not enough according to the campaigners. “Of the 8.5 billion that has been pledged for the entire education system (from primary school to university), only a small part goes to the universities. Moreover, this is mainly money that universities will receive once only in 2021 and 2022 to catch up with the backlogs caused by corona”, is the text on the action pages of Normaal Academisch Peil, the website that announces the Alarm Day.
The coalition of universities, unions and other societies therefore demand a structural increase of the state contribution of 1.1 billion per year.
Because of the restrictions due to corona, it is necessary to register in advance as a participant in the demonstration. Registration is possible until Friday 2 April until 14.00 hrs.
