PhD research by Chantal van Andel has shown that medical students with a migration background structurally receive poorer grades during their medical rotation. Moreover, these students often feel they are treated unfairly. They also have less trust in their assessor.

Many medical students of colour recognise this, says EM reporter and medical student Ferayed Hok. “In many cases, it’s subtle prejudice and vague remarks. Like the internist who asked the only brown intern in the group what she thought about euthanasia, because ‘Turkish and Moroccan people think differently about it’,” he says.
