Jeffrey is mad about parties, Esmeralda is always looking for unusual happenings and Manon loves culture. Every two weeks, they give you the best tips for a great day or evening out in Rotterdam.
Manon’s tip: Roffa Mon Amour
You’ve probably heard about the Rotterdam pleinbioscoop which descends on Museumplein for several weeks every summer. However, the less well known, but equally fun open air cinema on the roof of Hofplein station is definitely worth a visit too. From 19 to 30 July, Roffa Mon Amour presents the best films featuring new talent. So don’t expect Hollywood blockbusters, but films produced by the new generation from all corners of the world. Prefer to see a film which sounds more familiar? Then specially for you, there’s Throwback Thursday on 27 July. For everyone who loves films from the 1990s as much as I do, they are showing the controversial film Kids from 1995. One of those films ‘you really must have seen.’ A ticket costs 7.50 euros which gets you a chair and headphones. All the films begin after sunset between 10.15 and 10.30 p.m. Bring on those balmy summer evenings!
Wednesday 19 July to Sunday 30 July // Station Hofplein // 7.50 euros
Esmeralda’s tip: Costa del Roffa
As the summer finale to the tips I’ve given you over the past academic year, I present: Dâk. Rotterdam wouldn’t be Rotterdam if it didn’t use every free spot available in the city. This summer for example, from 21 July to 13 August the roof of Westblaak multi-storey car park is being transformed into what they describe as “Costa del Roffa”. Every day from 5.00 p.m., the barbecue smoulders and you and your friends can enjoy your own food or buy a barbecue pack there. But it’s not all about food; there will be DJs, live music and later to be announced festivities are being planned thirty metres up. Not to mention the lovely view over the city. Dâk is usually free, although there’s a small charge for the festivities and DJs. These will shortly be announced along with the programme, so keep an eye on the website. See you there!
From Wednesday 21 July to Sunday 13 August // Dâk (Westblaak) // Free
Jeffrey’s tip: Crazy Sexy Cool
Off to the ‘Magic Circus’ of Crazy Sexy Cool this summer! This festival is perfect for the open-minded and alternative partygoers among us, who love a festival where anything can happen and anything goes. Under the motto ‘expect the unexpected’, this festival organisation opens its circus doors on Saturday 5 August with an original festival twist. Listening to a very diverse range of styles from house and hiphop by Tod Terry, Ben fresh and Jeff Solo, it’ll be a wild evening. Expect flamboyant outfits and eccentric acts: for 27,50 euros you’ll see amazing sights and experience a memorable evening.
