Rotterdam’s pampered wealthy should take note: on Wednesday, two genuine student penthouses are to be opened on Groenendaal, right in the city centre. Super deluxe, although, at around 900 euros a month, they are far from cheap.

Clothes and a toothbrush are all you need to live in the apartments, according to the property company Groot in Vastgoed. “Everything is new,” added Corrie de Groot from the same company. “And super deluxe with a wonderful view.”

‘What we’ve understood from the media is that these days students want more luxury in their lives. Some international students have even suggested they don’t think they’re at all expensive.’

What about a wash basin with a skylight, where the light comes in through a transparent ceiling. There’s also a system to help you hang your paintings, as De Groot wants to be sure no culturally engaged students actually have to start drilling themselves.

The property company has placed the two apartments on top of the flat on Groenendaal, a property which it built in 1955 and has managed ever since. The floor area of both apartments is 92 square metres, and they each have four rooms and are suitable for three students.

De Groot explained that they would prefer to have students who are already friends. “That would be best, as I think that would make it easier if anything were to happen. We have several different apartments in the city where groups of friends live. And it works really well.”

The price for one of these luxury homes ranges from 820 to 990 euros per person per month. Consequently, De Groot gets almost 3,000 euros for one apartment. However, that’s an all-in price, including, for example, internet and taxes. Not to mention a green roof, a fourteen-square-metre terrace and a dishwasher. “I’ve heard people say: I’d love to be a student again,” purports De Groot.

‘Not really very expensive'

Expensive? Well… De Groot: “What we’ve understood from the media is that these days students want more luxury in their lives. Some international students have even suggested they don’t think they’re at all expensive. That did surprise us.”

The properties have been online for one week and dozens of students have already expressed an interest. De Groot: “But we still have to work everything out. One person doesn’t want it until, for example, August, while another person wants it earlier. Ideally we would like the properties occupied as of 1 April.”

‘Respectable and tidy'

One condition is that the students, who are assessed by De Groot herself, must be ‘respectable and tidy’. “Currently it looks super chic. We want it to look the same in a year’s time.” Students who have recently graduated are also welcome.
