Last Saturday, EBV Baros’ women’s A squad decided the regional derby against Green Eagles in Rotterdam’s favour. A good crowd was on hand at the court on Woudestein Campus to watch Baros’ players take their time to take control of the game. Green Eagles’ tired defenders were not swept off their feet until the fourth and final quarter: 76-56.
Baros’ ladies (who are coached by Selma Rooseboom) had successfully kicked off the new year in the Women’s Senior Promotion League with two consecutive victories, including a 82-59 victory over Green Eagles. However, since they’d been defeated by De Groene Uilen [the Green Owls] the week prior, the students were keen to get their act together again in front of a home crowd.
Baros got off to a solid start in the first quarter. The home team dominated the game and showed Green Eagles what they were capable of right from the start. The visitors seemed fairly impressed with Baros’ flying start; they made unnecessary mistakes and often lost the ball. It was up to Green Eagles’ enthusiastic substitutes to make the Maassluis team a little more aggressive. What ensued was a game in which both teams had their chances. Both teams were inconsistent, which resulted in several great goals, followed by several seemingly unmissable misses. At half-time, Baros led, 36-24.
Too careless to maximise opportunities
Baros likewise failed to take a greater lead in the third quarter. The home team was a little too careless to maximise the opportunities it was creating. Green Eagles smelled blood and seemed to realise that it might still get away with a few points. The visitors improved their game, but 48-39 was as close as they got to levelling the score.
In the early half of the final quarter, Baros continued to miss the opportunities it was given. However, since their Maassluis opponents were clearly exhausted, the home team was granted an opportunity to finish off the game in emphatic fashion. Supported by their loyal fans, Baros managed to take a significant lead, showing some excellent basketball in the final five minutes. In the end, the team was rewarded with an easy 76-56 victory.
‘Towards the end we got into a flow’
After the victory, Baros’ No. 4, Yvette Adriaans, a Biology and Medical Laboratory Science student at Avans in Breda, indicated that she was not satisfied with the team’s defence. “We didn’t do what we were supposed to do, defence-wise. We didn’t properly execute the plans we’d agreed upon.” Even so, Adriaans – who also plays for Premier League team CBV Binnenland – is convinced that her team is capable of much better work. “Towards the end we got into a flow and were more focussed, and as you could see, our defence was strong enough to stop this opponent.”
